I've been to Germany for December city breaks three times and am thinking of giving Austria a try this year. My problem is that I can't decide between Vienna and Salzburg. The guide books are only of limited help so I'd be grateful for the opinions of any boardies who have been to either or both.

How long are you going for and why are you going?
Sights, museums, pubs, clubs, christmas markets etc...

Sorry about that, I should have said. 3/4 nights and interested in atmosphere, good food & drink and a bit of history without going museum mad.

I love both places but you wouldn't need more than 3 days in Salzburg, it's not that big. Been to Vienna twice and still plenty left to see.

Yeah, I'd definitely go with Vienna. Do a search, there are loads of threads on it before.

I'd say the same thing, you'll see Salzberg in a day!

As everyone has said 3/4 days is too long in Salzburg - there are some nice daytrips nearby. If you just one to stay in the city for the weekend Vienna has a *lot* more to do.

Vienna would definitely have more to do - both are very pretty cities. At that time of the year you could take some lovely trips up to the Alps from Salzburg though. Nightlight would not be too hectic in Salzburg, plus they over play the Mozart and Sound of Music kitch for me.

Also, a day trip to Bratislava is very possible from Vienna.

Vienna it is so. That day trip to Bratislava sounds good too. Thanks for the responses.
