Hello, forgive me if this is the wrong section to post in.
Is there anywhere that you can find out about laws and the internet(on the internet) such as whats illegal and consequences of committing the crime.

I have done a quick search and then turned to here.
    Thanks

The internet as i believe has no laws within itself but the use of the Internet is governed by laws in each country in which the Internet is used.

An example of this would be say pedophilia is illegal in Ireland so a person who access pedophilia material in Ireland can be proscuted but pedophilia may not be illegal in Sudan (I really dont know if this is true but for the sake of an example) so a person who access pedophilia there would not be prosecuted.

What is it exactly you are trying to find out?

Ok.... :D, after a proof read of my own post i could probably redo it.

I was looking for the laws in Ireland regarding crime on the Internet such as illegal p2p downloading, hacking and things like that. Hope this helps.

    Thanks

These laws are relatively limited, as is the case in most EU jurisdictions. You'll find misuse of a computer under Section 9 of the Criminal Justice (Theft and Fraud Offences) Act 2001. And then the Criminal Damage Act 1991, Section 5 unlawfully accessing data and Section/Subsection's 2.

The Child Trafficking and Pornography Act 1998, has some interesting aspects also.

We also have the Criminal Justice (Counter Terrorism) Act 2005 on telephony which overlays aswell as the various Data Protection Acts 1998 / 2004.

You might also note that the Data Retention Enforcement Directive is due to be signed into law in October of this year, which covers off aspects of Criminal matters and Data Retention.

Take a look here for starters and also here which will give you some information to start with and may help to refine your question.

For the majority of cases I would say that a persons behavior online could amount to the offence of fraud, or the offence of theft, or as one of the other posters said the offence of paedophilia. There are a lot of offences created already in statute which don't need to be rehashed and redefined because the offence occurs 'online'.

Although I do see more cyber laws coming in the pipeline as legislators become more tech saavy.

There really isn't such thing as "internet law" per se.

The legal regime that applies in any situation depends on what role you are playing on the Internet at the time. Identifying this is key to any legal analysis of online activity.

For example, an ISP obviously offers connectivity; but it might also offer email, web hosting, a search engine and it's own content on a portal page. At once it's an ISP, a host, a navigation provider and a content publisher. The law governing each activity is pretty different.

Put differently, it really depends what you're up to :P
