I am looking to buy a Bridge Camera. I want something to use when it's not practical to lug a load of gear around. I also want to use it to lend to friends/family to help teach them about photography.

The two things I would like it to have is RAW & a Hotshoe.

What experience have people have in regards to quality & compromises on these beasties?

It's not exactly a bridge, but the Canon G9 is excellent!!

The G9 does sound like a good piece of kit. When is the G10 out?

I have the Canon G7 and can't fault it- G9 has greater mega Pixels and RAW, so slightly better and newer obviously
However, with full manual mode either the G7 or G9 would be great to learn on - they're excellent on holidays as you have basic SLR type capability and creativity with point and shoot portability.

might suit...has the RAW and the hotshoe. and those manual rings for focus and zoom will really impress you.Just beware about lending it, you may not get it back!

Had pretty much decided to get a Canon G9. Can get one for €375. It has taken me a while toget over feeling just that little bit dirty, but after getting a Macbook I may as well try the rest the Dark Side has to offer.

Now the G10 is available too. So deciding between the two of them.

The thing that puts me off the G10 is the 14.7MP when I feel that 12.1MP is already too much. Also it is quite a bit more than the G9.

What attracts me to the G10 is that it goes to 28mm on the wide side as opposed to 35mm on the G9.

Any insights from the Canon users or anyone that owns either of these beasties?

those megapixel counts are stupidly high, due to their tiny sensors the image quality is really suffering from it, i'd NEVER reccommend a point and shoot over 8 mp. EVER

Just so you know, there is a G9 on sale on Adverts right now (not mine).

    Huh?
Is the processor in the G10 not the same as the 50D?
Can't think of any reason why it wouldn't be able to produce a decent 14Mp image!

The sensor will be much smaller than one from an APS-C DSLR.

    megapixel myth

    google it

    in a nutshell
too many mp in a small sensor degrades image quality due to electrical interferance with each light receptor, more mp =bigger file sizes, pointless print size capabilities, slower write times, and degraded image quality

I was thinking of processor, rather than sensor.
My mind was fried from office politics.
    Don't need to google anything.
An hour of Scrubs has got me thinking straight again.

Hard to know what to think except its a great time to be a photographer......

I have just ordered my Canyon G9.

The drop in the £ to the € makes it quite affordable.

    1X Canon Digital Compact Camera
    2X Camera Battery - NB-2L
1x Secure Digital (SD HC) - 4GB - Sandisk Extreme III - With Sandisk Reader
1X Toshiba Secure Digital High Capacity (SDHC) Memory Card - 4GB

    All for about €400

This may end up being the camera I start to use the most, just because I plan to carry it with me a lot more. Was listening to Peter Wilcocks last night & he said he always has his G3 with him if he hasn't got the DSLR over his shoulder.

I am really enjoying the G9. Not shot anything really good with it so far, just doing stuff to get used to how compacts work & also working in the ways of the Dark Side. Have been doing a "My Day in Pictures" where you shoot all the things you did that day. Just a fun exercise. One shot attached. Not a great photo, but funny. The fault reported was that the equipment had no power, see if you can see why. LOL
