External HDD - connection keeps dropping

I have a 500GB external HDD. It's connected via USB 2.0, however every couple of minutes the connection drops & it then reconnects.. I can't copy over any large files etc. because the connection keeps dropping.

I tried getting a new USB cable for it.. made no difference

I also tried uninstalling the drive from device manager.. it then recognised the drive as new hardware, found & installed the correct driver again. This made a bit of a difference, as the drive now is available longer but it still re-connects itself every few minutes....

    Any ideas ???

Sounds like the power suply may be at fault? Is it USB powered, or adapter powered. If the latter, how does it connect to the power supply.

If it's solely USB powered have you tried it in a different port or on another machine?

It may be a power issue with your USB controller or ports.

Cheers for the replies lads... Had a look at it last night.. it def looks like a power supply issue... Played around with the a/c adapter... It's a lot more stable now but still not great...

Going to have to have a look on ebay now for a 6-pin A/C adapter! Hopefully pick one up cheap enough & hopefully that is the problem & it is not a problem with the drive's housing !

I bought the drive in Aldi about 14months ago... It's an Iqon drive, contacted iQon who have now gone into liquidation & told me to call Techgenie at €1.75pm... nice service lads

Meh. Gimme the model of the drive, or better yet, the voltage requirements of the drive. There may be something in Peats of Maplins that would suit it.

    Cheers!

Going from what's on the adapter:

    34.0W

    Input: 240V
    Output: 5.0V / 12.0V

The model of the drive is:

    iQon Technologies
    QDrive Extreme 500GB
