    Hi Everyone,

Picking up the kids a Wii for Christmas, however am a little clueless as to what accessories or extras I should ensure I also pickup ?

Will probably plan to pick up some Mario games, as they love that on their DS's.

So what are the key accessories/extras I should be looking to get ?

    Thanks for the advice.

I really don't want to end up feeling; "I should have got an extra....", "It won't work without that accessory...." ;)

The only thing you really need is another remote, just make sure you get Wii play as that comes with another remote.

I bought another nunchuck but there not really that necessary in most games.

Like ScumLord mentioned, extra remotes are all you need. Don't get suckered in to buying the plasticy add-ons to make the remote look like a golf club/baseball bat/tennis racket/etc. They're cheap (not in price), tacky and unnecessary.

A good battery charger might help too. Each remote comes with 2 regular AA batteries, but they can wear down soon enough if played often.

If you're getting Mario Kart, an extra wheel (although not strictly neccessary) is a good idea. Imagine one kid usnig the "cool" wheel and another just having the remote? Bound to be trouble.

I don't have the sports "add ons" but I've heard kids find them great.

Ok thanks everyone, this is helping me loads. :D

So along with the Wii console:

    Must Haves:
    - Wii Play - includes extra remote
    - Twin remote docking station with extra batteries

    Maybes:
    - Wii Remote twin grip pack
    - Wii Wheel

    Nice to Haves:
    - Wii Megapack
    - Wii Nunchuck

Let meet know of any other comments.

I'd have the extra nunchuk as a must have. More and more games using it.

I'll vote against Wii Play. It may come with an extra controller but you are better off getting the controller seperately since the Wii Play game is dreadful.

Best to just get Mario Galaxy and Mario Kart with enough controllers and wii wheels so that there won't be a fight over who gets the wheel.

I think you have it pretty much there mate,

I know there doing wii beach sports soon which will have another add on..but not sure what date or anything,,

Oh and the wii fit, which a few friends have and say is pretty cool..

    but get these anyway
    - wii play + remote
    - mario kart + wheel (maybe an extra wheel also)
    - extra nunchuk

as stated before all the wii shape add-ons are a waste of money

Ok, on the Wii Wheel there seems to be two types from browsing on Pixmania - Racing Wheel & Drive Steering Wheel. Does it matter which one?

Also, should I consider the Wii "YUV component audio / video cable" for connecting to plasma / av receiver ?

doent matter on the wheel as its only a lump of plastic to put the remote in,,

As for the component cable I'm not sure as I use an sd tv with the normal wire. but I get what I get what i expect out of the wii console

And as coillcam stated. get a gamecube controller (so u can play all the old gamecube games) whixh are cheap and as graphically good as the wii games

I would also recommend the gamecube controller (or otherwise called the classic controller). If your children are small (hence having small hands) then they may find it easier to play with the classic controller. Think they are about €15 in Game. The wheels for Mario Kart are about €10 in Game.

It will give you a much better signal and the games will look much nicer since you can play them in 480p resolution. The pack in video cables are useless are give a dreadful picture. However with young kids you might be wasting your money since they won't notice a difference other than some being easier to read.

    Games? :D

You've covered just about everything there, you won't use half that stuff as it is. The Wii remote works as a classic controller so their not completely necessary.

Yeah, games is next on the list.

I know I don't need every controller going, etc. but just at least wanted to understand the complete accessory package thats a must, even if some items are going to be picked up over time. :)

One thing you should bare in mind. Most games for the Wii seem to be two player but I've noticed with the likes of Mario galaxy which is basically one player it's a source for arguments, I don't know how old your kids are but if sharing is a problem avoid one player games like Mario galaxy. Mario is addictive and the kiddies probably won't want to stop playing it.

Agree about not getting the classic controllers. Kids much prefer to use the wheel.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,345 ✭✭✭✭Dodge

Another vote against the classic controller. I have one and use it for the odd downloaded game but as Retrogamer posted, more than likely kids will only need the wiimote (and nunchuk)

An extra remote and nunchuk are the only extras you'll need and most likely use. Maybe a Wheel or two.

Unless you are planning to play Retro Games on the Virtual console you wont need Classic or Gamecube controllers.

Depending what sort of Telly you have and how much time is spent Using the Wii a component cable might be a good idea, I found it greatly improved the picture.

There are buckets of good games the kids will enjoy,

Lego starwars/Indy/Batman (these all have great 2 player CO-OP modes).

    Mario Kart/galaxy/Strikers Charged.

Ravin Rabbids 1/2/3 (3 isn't out for a month or so I believe).
