Is Freesat possible without installing a dish?

    Hi all,

I apologise if this question has been posted. I'm bored to tears with the tv channels I could get. The reception in my apartment block is soooo bad that I can't even get TG4 (I'm not from here but still like Irish language :D)

The building management in my apartment block doesn't allow external installation of dish. Anyone could help me with this?

Thanks a million, in advance ;)

    Clueless as usual :p

No it can only be received using a dish at some location in the building

Well you could put up a dish and fight the management company as some have done here

    Tony,

    Thank you for the suggestion.
Did talk with the building management about it when I first moved in but they were very persistent. They also insisted that we have to get cable tv through their office and it would be "slightly more expensive than the market price", that I found it a little dodgy. Have been relying on dvds since until I came across this forum.

    Anyhoooooo thank you again.

Im living in a apartment also and have the same problem. The management company sent letters around a few weeks ago saying dishes etc would be taking down as there not allowed.I checked with my solictor to find out who owns the balcony and he replyed to me saying I own the balcony...although the management company say the balcony is theres!

My pleasure, I have come across instances of the mangement company having a financial interest in the cable provision so might be worth checking this out.

I am sure that someone on here mentioned something about EU law stating that every EU citizen is entitled to have access to satellite tv and the builders are plane wrong just trying to make some extra money by doing a deal <snip>. If I own the property I am installing what I like within reason, plain and simple. This practice is distortion of competition and could not stand up in in court if it ever got that far. Threaten the management with legal action and they will most likely back down.

    Hi all,

Thank you for all the suggestions. As I'll only be in Ireland for a year more for my work contract, I don't think I would get involved myself too much over satellite tv.

    Cheers :)

    Hi all,

Came home early today, again found nothing on tv :( Same old same old
Is there anything I can do to receive more tv channels with installing a dish?
Tried those "rabbit ears", it didn't work for me.

    Thank you again

the building management in my apartment block monopolies the cable tv services. basically, we have to get the service through their office and i'm not keen on that. a lot of apartments have such arrangements :(

Just get what you want be it NTL or Sky. <snip> My sister lives in a <snip> area and now has Sky as does numerous others in her building. The residents just did not stand for the management telling what they could and could not watch.

    My 2 cents
Put up the dish and tell the management to f**k off and you're watching your favourite episode of Whatever:D

There are other options, besides the conventional dish, that mightn't attract attention.

I kinda like the Sqish: http://www.uberreview.com/2008/06/sqish-hides-your-unsightly-satellite-dish-chameleon-style.htm

A lot more expensive, but might appease the stricter managment companies/landlords.

I think a lot of the problem with management companies though, is that they're probably getting/or have gotten revenue by limiting the choices of cable suppliers to a particular estate to none, thus want to discourage home owners from installing their own solutions.

Sounds like UPC is effectively barred from the block - this is outrageous, mgmt company even saying you can't have anything but their 'slightly' more expensive (and utterly crap) tv service, backhanders ahoy.

OP, If I was you, get a dish - is it to the front of the building? If not, do it - fecjk them, I did and I was threatened with a couple of grand fine too.

Utter robbery and criminality on behalf of mgmt company.

A friend of mine bought a cheap freesat dish from Lidl\Aldi (Can't remember which) that was for camper vans. It's a small dish and he just screwed it onto a board for stability and sticks it out on the balcony whenever he wants to watch satellite, then takes it back in afterwards.
