Weird question but what im looking for cannot be gotten in Ireland anymore! Farmers will be familiar with this so please try help me. I need the caustic stick for de-horning young calves. If anyone can help with where to get it-a website or an area in Ireland (or outside) that might still have them in stock.

Is caustic debudding still legal here?
    I don't know, try a vet or a veterinary chemist I suppose.
They'll either confirm that it's no longer legal or be able to supply.

My father used this stuff when it was on the market. It came in a tube, it was basically a white stick. The tube was yellow.

He is using some other stuff now, a paste I think but its not near as good.

Does anyone know the one in the yellow tube that Im on about and where I could source it on the net?

I think thats the Hornoff brand. AFAIK it was discontinued a couple of years ago. My understanding is that there is currently no licensed caustic product on the market in ireland. Occasionaly some companies import the SH PLus brand or equivalent, retail it for a while and when the Department find out they are told to withdraw it (i think it may be subject to the licensing system regarding animal remedies).

I know i'm joining this thread 3 months after the discussion but can this caustic still be got in the North or is there a website that will deliver.

I know of a child that swallowed a pea sized lump of caustic many years ago, the child had a miserable 'existence' before dying at about 18/19 years of age.

Please be careful if using this substance.

why would any one want to go back to taking horns off with caustic, its slower not as controlable[apply too much =bleeding] also if used on suckled calves can burn cows udder = calf not getting suck if mother is cross already. small dehorner with gas in handle is great.

There are several junky gas dehorners on sale out there. After owning a few over the years, I would advise you to buy a Portasol. They are about €100. Easy to use and very good.

That's the one to go for. There are some cheaper, lighter ones on the market which are complete rubbish, but this model is superb.

A gas iron connected to a cylinder of gas is by far the best job.It should be left for a while until it is absolutely red hot and scoops out the horn in seconds.

The gas in the handle iron dosen't get as hot and needs more work to remove the horn.
The electric iron is even worse as it dosen't get anywhere near hot enough.
The caustic is useless for the reasons mentioned in a previous post.
