Putting a Hard Drive from a 60GB PS3 into a 40GB PS3. Safe?

My PS3 broke the other day, and I got a 40GB. The question, would it be safe to put the 60GB HDD straight into the 40GB PS3 without formatting it?
    I don't want to wreck another PS3!

The firmware might need to be updated but it should be fine as long as the hard drive isn't faulty but even then that won't break your new ps3.

See, my PS3 is being repaired, and my cousin was going to lend me his 40GB, I was going to put my 60GB in it, and then I was going to put my HDD back in mine when is back. Tried it there and it says I need to install 2.42(even tho thats what its at). I dont want to do harm to my HDD, or his PS3

You won't break his PS3 or your hard drive but as the Almighty says you'll need to update the firmware on the PS3.
