I'm getting abuse on the Gambling forum for tipping up Gete Wami to win the Great North Run tomorrow (was 4/1, now 3/1 with boylesports). Any opinions out there?

Martin Fagan is down to run the mens race but in not sure whether he'll be there or not after his injury in Beijing.

Hopefully you took your own advice on Wami...

Great run by Fagan - 62mins - is that the second fastest Irish ever? After John Tracey? Or did Mark Carroll go faster?

Vinny Mulvey 66mins - good run.

    I backed Wami alright.

That's a superb run from Fagan. 6th place beating guys like Limo and Martinez. If he can kick on from what he's done in the last year and keep himself injury free then he can go to a European champs as a contender in the marathon.

Fair play to the 82yr old lad who had a triple bypass 16yrs ago too. Makes you wonder how many more years of running could be ahead of you if you want...

That must have been Owld Jarra Jim (as he told me they call him). I was chatting to him as we walked away from the finish after last years Great Ireland Run. He wanted to do another few 10k Great Runs last year and then Great North Run again this year. I assumed he must be about 60 until he told me how he remembered being in Dublin with his wife just after the war which wouldn't add up. Then he showed me the scars on his knees from the knee replacements. Talking to him was very inspirational for me as I was only starting to run at the time and had a tough race. I realised I'd a 30+ year headstart on him and he's been running for about 25 years so there would be plenty of opportunity to go again.

Found a newspaper article about him.

Would vinny think of moving up to the marathon ?, He's had a good season on the road this year starting with the win in his home race.
My second run of the year was in a Bhaa 5 mile race, and he laped me after 2 miles :( .
Sound chap met him running in clondalkin one day and had a good chat to him, gave a few suggestions on training.. Sound chap.
