Occam's razor

It seems to me that the logical heuristic known as Occam's razor is based on dangerous assumptions in the days we live in. Is it really logical to follow this rule of thumb when dealing with organisations as devious, cunning and insidious as the illuminati. Their very existence seems illogical, but they do exist! Please share your opinions on the pitfalls of this rule, or others within formal logic which seem to be rather useless in dealing with the grand conspiracies we are faced with today.

Its more for scientific observations no? Or as a strong guideline, not as an absolute rule. Yes, I agree, when investigating conspiracies, or anything involving a cover up you should use a combination of techniques including Occam's razor, but no one technique should dominate.

Question on the Illuminati though, haven't they basically dissolved since the 17th century...

Occums razor is more often than not correct, but not always of course. I believe skeptics rely too heavily on it without acknowledging that by it's own definition, it is not infallible.

I'm curious as to why you think that the existence of the illuminati would be illogical?

What I think is 'fun' is that if you assume there can't be conspiracies, as many do, you create a more favourable environment for them to thrive...

And even if the Illuminati in its Weishaupt form dissolved, the meme was spread enough there would certainly be imitators. Unless you assume that a given group would be at a competitive disadvantage if they kept their goals and practices secret, which doesn't seem to be that logical...
