I am looking at getting a new racing bike around €800. Whick bike is better for me? A 2008 Trek 1.5 from my local bike shop for €800 or a Wilier Evasion Mirage from BikeBuster which is €850 including shipping! Has anyone bought a bike like this online? What was your experience? Any tips or comments would be appreciated!
    Thanks!

    I have Trek 1.5 - its a great bike!

I've only changed the saddle to Specialized Alias 143cm, other that that its as bought.

The Trek is prettier, which is obviously the most important thing :D

LBS wins over online, all else being equal.

    Prefer aheadset on the Trek.

I'd also be tempted to ask the shop about the price difference to upgrade the drivetrain from Sora/Tiagra to 105 (out of curiosity if nothing else).

Not personally keen on a carbon seatpost unless you have a carbon frame, but that's just me.

I'm having similar trouble picking a bike for the Summer.
    I've narrowed it down to,
    1. The new Giant Defy 1 http://www.giant-bicycles.com/en-GB/bikes/road/2428/32436/

    2.Trek 1.7 http://www.trekbikes.com/uk/en/bikes/road/1_series/17e/

    3.Ridley Triton S http://www.ridley-bikes.com/bikes.php?category=1&bike=38
    or http://www.ridley-bikes.com/bikes.php?category=1&bike=39

I already have a Giant SCR, which I am very comfortable with, These bikes are in and around the same price, The Trek being maybe, about €2-300 dearer than the other 2.

    Any opinions on these??

Wilier all the way for me. Why?

    1. I already own a Wilier (different model though) and am very happy with it.
    2. Frame looks slightly better, carbon seat stays vs. an all aluminium job.
    3. Better wheels.
    4. I'd take a Mirage groupset any day over Sora. While around half the people who've used Sora seem happy with it, the other half give out no end. You don't hear the same complaints about the lower end Campag groups.
    5. Mirage is 10 speed, Sora is nine.
    6. The Wilier comes with Campag cranks. The Trek doesn't stretch as far as providing Shimano cranks and you've got those Bontrager ones instead. They could be fine, just haven't heard much about them.
    6. €800 is a bit steep for a Sora equipped Trek come to think of it.

Just noticed that the Willier has carbon rear stays which are a plus, Campag groupset and fulcrum wheels. The Trek is pretty basic enough and the bontrager components are crap and isnt that great to be honest and everyone has them. At least with the Willier you wont look like everyone else.

Do you mind me asking where you canget it for €850 as it seems like a good deal

I know nothing about the quality of either bike, but I would have said the WILIER EVASION was prettier.

Just came across this ancient thread, and I noticed I never answered your question! I saw it here and it's now coming in at €771.52 incl shipping! I actually went for the Trek 1.5 in my LBS and he gave me a huge discount on it seeing as I used to work there part-time! Thanks for your help :D

Wilier for me. & I agree with el tonto re. the mirage vs sora groups.

My first road bike had a mirage group (9sp) and it was excellent. I spec'd Campag on my current bike because my experience was so positive and I won't be spec'ing shimano on any future bikes either.

Coupled with the more advanced frame and definitely better wheels I wouldn't feature the trek as being in the running. My 2 cents.

Thanks for that guys! I got a Trek 1.5 at an unbelievable price in my lbs ages ago but I am already thinking of upgrading! I emailed bordercitycycles and got a response within minutes from Phil! Wow. He gave me a full list of prices on any bikes I was interested in: I kind of have my eyes set on the Wilier Izoard. RCUK did a test here. He said he can get me the Izoard Centaur for £1920 - RRP £2054 or the Pro Version for £2200 - RRP £2446. Are these good deals? The best other deal I could find online was this but only available in Large and I would need small or medium! Actually Epic Cycles here have it for £1900. Maybe I'll get onto my LBS as he is mainly a Wilier dealer (and a club mate has one of these bikes so I'll find out how he finds it and maybe even get a quick spin! :D)

Can anyone reccomend another good bike around the €1500-€2000 mark?

Hey Ballyhoura, I was going to buy the WIlier Izoard Centaur last Oct, I was completely set on it BUT the guys at Epic Cycles told me about the Viner Magister :

    http://www.epic-cycles.co.uk/Viner.htm

This is a Viner special edition with basically the same kit as the Wilier except the Viner has a carbon Centaur groupset and costs nearly £500 less. I was still undecided but then the Epic guys said that whilst both were great bikes, the Wilier frame was not worth £500 more than the Viner. Viner apparently are right next door to Campag and get big discounts and pre season kits .... blah de blah, hence the great price.

I ended up with the Viner in the end, and I dont regret it one bit. Its a great bike, plenty comfortable on these crap roads ( Kerry ) but goes like a rocket if ya got the legs.

Bottom line : I would spend the £500 difference on a 'feck off' wheelset upgrade rather than on a ' maybe but only maybe slightly better ' frame.

    Just me 2 cents.
