This event is for a good cause, and should still present a very healthy prize-pool on the night, so with that in mind...

What do people think of this as a way to run fund raisers? I've done a few of them now and they seem to be fairly popoular, cheap and cheerful and the fund raiser donation is clearly designated.
    What does anyone think?

I wanna keep this on page 1 as its for a very good cause so ... b.u.m.p.

We ran a good few fund raisers and always had a good turnout. We found that getting local businesses to donate prizes; meals for two, few bottles of wine etc. meant that we could run a decent raffle on the night and almost double the money donated to the charity.

Thanks for that, I've done a fair few fund raisers also, the problem i've always had is in making it attractive to the poker players as well as the local (fund raiser supporters) populace. I think this way is good all round, the poker players know what the fund raiser donation is and there still a nice prize pool generated for every1.

Personally I think its disgusting using poker as a fundraiser. Why don't you hold a raffle??

Disgusting eh? A tad strong there Mr. Kidd. Poker nights can be quite social events and I don't see the harm in incorporating a fund raiser element into it as long as the contribution to the fund raiser is clearly designated. Long before the entire Texas Hold'em evolution, Poker classics were huge in every inch of the country as charity and sports club fund raisers.
Why hold a raffle? Why not just stand in the road with a bucket in your hand? Thanks for the feed back though, much appreciated and very helpful, keep up the good work

"the contribution to the fund raiser is clearly designated."
What if nobody tops up?? Transparent payout structures are quite fashionable nowadays

"Long before the entire Texas Hold'em evolution, Poker classics were huge in every inch of the country as charity and sports club fund raisers."
That doesn't make it right.Every man and his dog seem to be skimming poker lately

Why hold a raffle? Why not just stand in the road with a bucket in your hand?
If you're that concerned about fundraising I would admire this direct approach

"Thanks for the feed back though, much appreciated and very helpful, keep up the good work"
    You're welcome

Jeez, is this guy for real?
    1.
If nobody tops up then theres no fund raiser contribution, i'm fairly sure this won't happen as people who go to fund raiser nights (be they raffles or standing in the middle of the road with a bucket nights) tend to contribute.
    2.
I never said Poker classics were right or wrong, i merely pointed out that they were popular. ''Every man and his dog seem to be skimming poker lately'' you've got issues man. Oh confused would we?
    3.
'If you're that concerned about fundraising I would admire this direct approach'
Thank you, my direct approach is to cancel my normal Friday night gig and drive to Mullingar, set up and run a poker tournament single handedly at no charge.
    4.
Hows your numbers looking for the game in Ennis on October 31st?
I'll try and get down for that one.

gkidd, are you in the wrong forum?

I don't think Mick is just any old man and his dog. Mick has being running poker tournaments for a long time and has quite a following around Cavan and surrounding area. if he was skimming do you think they would play. NO.

Can i ask have you ever played one of Mick's tournaments. Probably not i guess. I think you should then come on and offer your apologies.

Poker is indeed another way for charity's to raise funds for there causes. I think it is very honorable to offer your services to make money for a good cause. Why wouldn't he just do one for himself and make a bit of cash.

From my many experiences of a poker charity nights top-ups always happen, everyone donates freely. If You had played one of Mick's tournaments you would realise that he keeps accurate details of how many topups and rebuys have been made throughout the night. Unlike, CPT or some others. You can see it on the tournament clock.

I think you miss the point. A raffle is only entertainment for 10 secs while the draw is made. Poker can last for many hours. Seems like a good value deal to me.

Keep up the good work Mr. Wolf

This game in Bambricks of Mullingar was great craic.
We had 30 players so the prize-pool generated was €1,800.
Everybody topped up so we had a total of €600 raised for the Irish Cancer Society.
The winner on the night was Paddy Owens who won €700.
    The full pay out was:
    1st: €700
    2nd: €300
    3rd: €200
    4th: €150
    6th: €120
    7th: €100
    8th: €80
    9th: €70

With a €70 ticket for best hand
    €10 for league
    Total €1,800

There will be another game there on Friday October 24th. (not a fund raiser this time) with the same blind and buy in structure. Instead of the €20 top up going to charity there is a €10 registration fee with all other money being paid out on the night.

    Thanks Paddy,
I'm not to good at finding my way round Mullingar, but as I come in from Castlepollard direction, I turn kleft at Mc Donalds and its on my left.
Come for the next one if you can buddy, would love to break 50 players in this game, i'm thinking of doing it monthly.
50 players will give us a €3,500 prize pool for a relatively cheap spend (€60 with 1 rebuy or top up for €20)
    Thanks for the support Paddy
    Talk to you soon
    Mick

That'd be great Paddy, i'm sure we could organise something big in midlands/north next year if we put our heads together. Can't let Kerry and Dublin get all the Poker glory (they get enough of that in the Football)
    Talk to you soon,
    P.S.
Check out the website at www.cavanpoker.com if you get a chance
