Herself is driving a 00 Skoda Fabia 1.4 and got the annual car service yesterday. They told her that her timing chain will require changing soon and will cost around €500.

The car has 72,000 miles and been serviced regularly.

It is not a dealer price and in Kildare. It this price good bad or ok.

seems about right for a dealership belt replacement. pricey but essential :)

EDIT: just noticed its not a dealership, seems a bit much then, call a Skoda dealership and see what they quote by comparison. And make sure to get the water pump and tensioners done along with it.

The OP said it's a chain, not a belt. 72k miles for a chain replacement is a bit soon.

I think the 1.4 Fabia is belt driven afaik. 1.2 is chain driven.

The 16vs have a belt as all the diesel engines in fabia.
The 8vs have chains (double) with no tensioners.
The 12vs have chains (single) with hydraulic tensioners (2).

So the question is do you have the 8v or 16v?

Really depends so whether the OP has the MPi or 16v 1.4 litre then.

I think it is the 16v comfort.

    would that be correct?

Yes it could well be. In which case you should def get the belt changed, 60k/4 yrs is recommended so get it done asap :)

place that she got it serviced said it was chain.

that is what she told me.

Firstly find out for sure which model it is. then call skoda and ask for a quote for comparative purposes.

    I have exact same car.

Mr.David is correct. I got my timing belt changed at 60k mileage.

she rang up a skoda dealer today.

They thought she was looking for parts so stay said €65 + VAT. So she goes how much to replace. They went around €750

How many hours do it take to fix. It can't be roughly 7 hours at €100 p/h

It's the most complicated belt. Depending on the car, an awwwful lot of stuff has to be removed to get it out and replaced.

I'd expect the cheapest timing belt replacement job to be about 400-500.

Since you're talking about a dealership, €750's probably about right.
