VOIP Basic Question

Hi,
sorry if same question is asked before,
i have dsl with ice but no phone line so i was just thinking to get one but to pay line rent for just having land line to expensive.
i was wandering is there any device i can connect ty my broadband (nic cable or wifi) and then connect ordinary handset to get land line number. (i need this number to receive phone call most of the time as to ring from outside of Ireland mobile is way to expensive).
can some one please guide me to right direction and i dont mind to having even us, uk, irish or any other country number price would be a factor for me to consider.

thanks for very quick reply but do i need to signup some where to get phone number so my family can ring that number or it come with box?

Have a look at Blueface.

There may be a VOIP provider (similar to Blueface) that can give you a number in your family's country so that they can call you on a local number rather than paying for an international call.

But bear in mind that the call quality over a wireless internet provider may not be great.

but ice i m alreayd paying 37.99 so dont want to pay more,

and is there any service giving free uk number? coz most of time i'll be receiving calls not making,

No. That's a SIP device. Skype is a proprietary system and you'll need to either use a PC (with a headset/ USB "phone") or else get one of the few standalone hardware devices available. There's a similar thread here on the subject :
