When I put a disc in the drive whirs like it always did, but it's as if the laptop and the disc drive aren't connected. Nothing shows up on the screen and the drive isn't accessible through "Computer". I'm running Vista on a Toshiba.

*EDIT* Went to Device Manager, clicked "check for solutions", and nothing. Tried updating the drivers but it's up to date apparently.

    Try the following.
    Firstly uninstall the driver.
    Go to device manager.
    Right click uninstall.
    Then delete upper lower filters.
    To do this

    Step 1: Start Registry Editor
Click Start, , type regedit,in start search. Registry Editor starts.
Step 2: Delete the UpperFilters registry entry
    1. In Registry Editor, expand My Computer, and then expand HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE.
    2. Expand SYSTEM, and then expand CurrentControlSet.
    3. Expand Control, and then expand Class.
    4. Under Class, click {4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}.
    5. In the right pane (topic area), click UpperFilters.

Note An UpperFilters.bak registry entry may also appear. To delete the UpperFilters registry entry, you must click UpperFilters and not UpperFilters.bak.
    6. On the Edit menu, click Delete.
    7. When you receive the following message, click Yes to confirm the deletion of the UpperFilters registry entry:
Are you sure you want to delete this value?

lower filters are also in here.

    Finally block all startups.

Type in system into the start search.
Open the program called system configuration.
then you will see a tab along the top called startup.
Click and the seect disable all.

    Restart computer.

    If not resolved.Full Recovery needed.
If Fr doesnt work Hardware issue

Before doing anything - is it being picked up in the BIOS?

If it's not showing in the BIOS,then it may be a hardware problem.
