Where does the Warhead come in? :D

I just thought a thread discussing dimebags gear would be good.

I got a Bill Laurence 500XL off ebay and stck it in my jackson but i it was by the Bill Laurence company and not Willie and his wife but its still a hot no fo!

I always thought he sounded a bit tizzy/fuzzy tbh.

Yeah he used solidstate amps so he didnt have the warmth of a valve sound but i reckon he was one of the most experimental metal guitarist around.

Granted the solos got abit thrown together and crappy towards after awhile eg '5 minutes alone' and 'where you come from' as opposed to the earlier one eg 'proud to be loud' 'domination' and the sheer awesomness of 'live in a holes' intro!

I was never that into him, though hes has great riffs, and every now and then I hear a bit I think is cool. But I meant was, would you really be that interested in his rig/sound do you like the sound of his gear?

    BostonB,

I think the fact that i started a thread about it would suggest that yes, yes I would be interested in his rig/sound, and yes i do like the sound of his gear.

Also that is the worst typed comment ever!:D

Turn the gain up to 100 and rip the mid button off your amp. There you go.

Everyone seems to jump on the "I hate Dime's tone" band wagon, particularily when they hear he used *god forbid:eek:* solid state.
The extra harshness and bite kinda suits Pantera's grinding sound IMO.
Dime coulda' picked any amp he wanted but he used his ear when choosing and selected solid state.
Having said that he was probably p*ssed most of the time with Pantera and used valve amps (AFAIK) with Damageplan. :D

I've been using a solid state Ampeg for years for Metal stuff and wouldn't change it for anything.

He used a valve krank amp for the Damageplan album and, I dunno about you fellas, but I think it sounds flat and lifeless compared to the Pantera stuff. Vulgar Display Of Power, in particular, sounds spot on for what they were doing.

I hardly think you can say the tone was crap for pantera. It suited their sound perfectly. It shows some innovation that he didn't just get a marshall tube head like everyone else. He went his own way and sought his own sound, and thats part of what made Pantera, and Dimebag stand out from the rest.

    +1

and hes tone was eq'ed in such a way that rex's bass just complented the sound.

All I said was he sounded bit tizzy/fuzzy to me. He made a signature sound out of what most people try to avoid. Unless of course you want to sound like him, which is fair enough. I used to have a Metal Zone pedal that was voiced along those lines. I was reading he used to flip his bridge pickup ala Hendrix. Which is interesting, as I was listening to Pantera on the way home, and his sound is bassier than I remember.

In my experiance the tone that peope most of the time want but can never achieve is dimebags tone. Like i dunno how it was for everyone else here in different places but when me and all the people i know who were into metal started playing guitar, the dime tone was always the be all and end all. All in all i think its a pretty valid thread, a lotta people got love for dime, and his tone, like me for instance :).

Also i do believe that Dime always used marshall cabs that had a randall front to em, I think its in several interviews etc.

It might depend on when you got into it. I'm more of an 80's metal head.

Look at new amps, might start lookin at ampegs,
Yeah the damageplan stuff was just going through the motions imho, non of the pantera dynamics.
The reason he initially didnt use a valve amp is because he thought it would be too bassy for what he wanted,

Yeah it started getting bassy around TGSTK but before that its serious trebley gain territory.
Also yes he used Bill Lawrence 500XLs in his bridge position and flipped them around.

Not according to my original post but i dunno how accurate that is so lets not fight about it!:D
