HMR kills

Little doubt among those that have used them extensively that .17 hmr has revolutionised rimfire shooting, centrefire accuracy at 100 and really improved wind bucking compared to .22. Rarely need to consider wind to 75 yards. Had a magpie recently at 170 yards however my best ever was a grey last year at 204. I'm sure if the conditions were right crows would be possible up to 250 yards. There must be a few accounts of such here.

BTW I use a BSA sweet 17 6-18 x 40, not great glass but adequate. The magnification and yardage adjustment make all the difference IMHO.

Fantastic little round for vermin control. I use this little beauty, Anschutz 1517 Thumbhole stock with Hawke Frontier SF 6-24 X 50 and regularly take rabbits out to 180 metres off the bipod.

It's a fantastic little round. Definitely on my agenda as a bunny-buster at some point.

Have been using the 17 HMR for about 10 months or so now and have got to say its a great little round. Had a .22lr for years and I was a great fan of it but iv got to say I would go with the 17HMR over the .22lr now. I was bit worried about meat damage to the bunnies from stories I had heard before but iv had very little problem in relation to it. Iv taken rabbits from 25 paces to just under the 180 mark with it. Most droped with the first shot at the 180 paces mark. Wind can be a factor on the small round, but with plenty of practice you can work around this. Its a great round and a joy to fire.

Is that a Varmint Dwight? I heard on a UK forum that CZ are bringing out the Silhouette(synthetic stock) in .17 HMR can anyone confirm this ??

Does the moderator do anything for the .17 HMR round considering its supersonic ?

It does take away the bang but you still get the supersonic crack. I read a lot of peoples views (mainly .22 users!) on this saying it scares rabbits away but I regularly shoot groups of 5 or more without them all scarpering and found if you stand 20 yards from someone shooting the HMR you can't even tell where it's coming from. Thats enough for now as I'm just off out lamping with it and the 22-250!

its the cz american. the mod quiets it down a good bit..Without it it is similar to a 22 magnum and with it on its like a 22lr high velocity maybe a touch less.

Iv'e got a marlin vs with a sak moderator, even though you still have the supersonic crack the rabbit's still hang around and it dosen't seem to scare them as much, longest shot was 198 yard's on a jackdaw, longest distance on a fox was 125 yard's and he only took about 3 steps before collapsing ina heap.presentationconvent013kr0.jpg

Is the sweet 17 any good, I heard it was a bit of a gimmick, and it often lost its zero

One of the lads brings his 17hmr with us when we go bunny hunting. We mainly use my .22 bulpup for most bunnys but when the long range ones present themselfs we switch to the 17. I find it a bit of over kill for anything under 120, also is so much heavier than the .22 tht i have to say I would stick with my .22 bulpup cause of its compact and lightweight design. Its only drawback is the long range bunnys.

Oh and b4 somone says " wht happens if we meet a fox" and only have .22, I swap clips to the elley wasps and have no problem dropping mr foxy.

I checked out the reports about them on rimfire forums before I bought and there are a lot of bad reports. However for every bad report there are probably two good ones. I think a lot of it is snobbery by those who wouldn't accept less than premium german glass on any rifle.

In my experience the sweet 17 is ideal for long range shooting except in very low light conditions. Mine never lost zero in over a year with a lot of hacking around. There may be some duds but at the very low prices they are worth a gamble. I bought mine on ebay from Hong Kong for about €70 including postage. In the right conditions I can get 3/4 inch groups at 100 yards.

I find the yardage turret very good. I leave it set at 100 and make no adjustment for shots between 25 and 100. I estimate 25 yard increments after that.

Took two magpies today, one at 100 and one at 150+. At those kind of ranges its usually 50:50 for me.
