    Considering TCD for Zoology. Enquiring..

For 1st and 2nd year I do science, so how many subjects of science do i pick for 1st and 2nd year? Can I JUST pick biology or do I have to pick more than one?

Anyone who has information on the course, I'd be grateful for some help :)

The general gist is you enter Science as a Natural Science undergraduate. Within the first week you pick 3/4 subjects, for a zoologist it's typically
    Maths, Biology and chemistry
    Maths, Biology, Geology or Geography.

In 2nd year you take biology 1 (cell and molecular) and biology 2 (ecology and other big stuff) and another subject.

At the end of 2nd year you choose which subject you want to take for 3rd and 4th year (Zoology, Neuroscience, Chemistry etc.). There are a limited number of spaces per course. Zoology has about 24, if more than 24 people apply the people with the best grades (based on their Bio2 and Bio1 scores in 2nd year) are selected.

You then take Zoology for 3rd year and 4th year. In 3rd year you are able to select about 1/5 of your courses from outside zoology, either from other science subjects or from broad curriculum (you'll learn more about that in due time). You can take all your courses from Zoology if you want to.

In 4th year you take all your subjects from Zoology and classes are taught in a tutorial and work shop manner rather than the typical lecture style. A far chunk of this year will be spent researching a final year project and wrting it up as a dissertation/thesis. Your final result will be based solely on your thesis and your final year exams (you don't get any marks for your previous years).

Everything that I've said above should be mostly correct at time of printing but things change from year to year. What's important if you want to be a Zoologist is that you have spend 2 years studying a lot of different science, from chemical bonding to mathematical matrices to immunology. This is good in one way for Zoology because it's so broad that the more you know the better off you are. But on the other hand, if you just love learning about animal you may find yourself bored more easily.

    I tend to ramble.

Sorry to hijack this thread but it is somewhat related and I didn't want to open a new thread just for my one question. How do you get into the zoology building?? Is it through the big brown door? I tried to open it and it just wasn't happening for me.I'm supposed to meet my tutor  Help?

Actually, it was on the front of Trinity News today that JF Science is the first to be semesterised, so apparently you can do one subject for half the year then change and pick a new one.

I don't know the building- did you try swiping your card? I heard most of science are registering tomorrow so you'd have your card then to swipe.

Yes the main entrance to zoology is through the big brown door with Zoology written above it. The door is open from around 9-1 and from 2-5 at lunch time it's locked.

    Yay - new potential Zoologists!

Hi, I'm a final year in Zoo! The Natural Science course has been changed this year, apparently Biology has been split into Bio1 and Bio2 in first year as well, so I'm not sure. I think you have to take both to do Zoology - In my year you defo had to take them both in 2nd year and first year Bio was a prerequisite, so it kinda follows suit. Zoology is great, but it is a bit more Artsy than Scientific with a lot of emphasis being placed on phylogeny and history of evolution. The staff are really nice and really helpful so if you have any questions I suggest asking them. Check out the Zoology Dept website or talk to any of the ZooSoc committee!

Fiona (the administrator) generally takes her lunch around 2-2.30ish and locks the door when she leaves, but really the Zoo building is open from 9-5, just ring the door. If your tutor is John Rochford he has a sign up by the entrance to the building saying what times he's available.

By the way, best thing you can do for more info is join ZooSoc!!

I'm planning on doing zoology too!
I'm currently in second year science...
First year I did Biology, Geography, Geology, Foundation Physics and Maths Methods...
You don't need to do chemistry in first year fo zoology...
This year I'm Bio 1, Bio2 and Geology...

    Hope that helps...
