Book Cover - Voting and final suggestions.

Hello, fellow enthusiasts! I am following Year Book - Cover thread and there is a poll now. I have taken into consideration all presented cover designs in chronological order.

Don't forget that we are talking about the design - the characters could be altered (the information contained within presented font/colour/size). The book will be 10" x 8" landscape.

The type of the cover is bound definitely to the book design. Softcover would provide us free space at the the back of the front cover page. That space should be used for information about this project.

There will be no poll for that because there are not enough poll possibilities here. Please, state the number here, variant where needed and your comments for the cover designer to take it into your consideration, please.

It's a bit messy, a lot of the options above were works in progress. It may be better to get one design from those who submitted potential options (or two if they're quite different) and take it from there. I personally like sineadw's take on things but which one to pick? Are we voting for a design, a designer or a design concept to be ironed out later?

The way I have understood the Cover design, we are talking about format (size) independent design - colour of background, background picture, font types, sizes, colours and graphic elements used on the cover.

Yes, I do agree that we could ask designers to provide front and back cover pages 8 x 10" (landscape), but that would cause delays. If they want to do so, they are more than encouraged to share their final tunings.

I'm up for Sineadw's super-minimalist no.2 design (the boards eyes and 2008 on the front). For the back how about having it inversed, so that it looks like the logo and the 2008 are solid through the book. Make it look like a solid block!

Personally I'm stuck between:

13. kjt - another
17. smelltheglove - blue one
18. Fionn - another one (my personal favorite) and another one (this second one)

But I think I would have to settle for 18. Fionn (the second one)
I would have to say that I think that the cover pic should be picked like the photography comp does, by us, it should be only from submissions of people who will be in the book but a picture that will not be in the book (if that makes sense )

hi all
a few things first;
I think the general concensus is for a dark minimal(istic) cover
the orientation is deemed to be 10 x 8 landscape
I think the Boards logo should be included somewhere in the final design, to those who disliked the shutter symbol - what i was trying for there was to keep with the overall look of the logo, if you look to the top of your page you will notice the oval shape next to the Boards logo I just swapped that out for the shutter.
I also think that the word Photography should also appear (we all know what its about but others might not)

I'm of the opinion that the cover should answer a few basic questions in no particular order.
What?
When?
Why?
Who?

i would also like to think that all these entries were concept works and open to suggestions amendments etc.
On the question on who i would vote for! well let me ssay that there were no outright bad submissions so it was difficult to choose and also a lot of them were very similar.
I do like #17. smelltheglove however perhaps it would not suit a landscape orientation and i would have preferred it in greyscale and a different font - but i liked the concept.
and i agree with sheesh that #15. sineadw - a smaller one is very good - it's minimal and answers most of the questions.
I've noted that only seven people submitted cover designs and about 16 people have voted or voiced opinions etc. Now i'm not included in submissions to the book because i was out of the country at the time and missed the whole process, so anyway that leaves about 15 out of 117 people who expressed an interest in the cover of a book they will be buying and have their work inside, i would have thought there would have been more input! but to thse that have made the effort - congrats on getting this far, well done!

Well ... I like Fionns last one (The other one) in 18 for two reasons ...

The shape of the book will be nicer ... you can still at portrait pictures but they will have a bigger surround.

I think the picture works well ... it is not over the top.

Good suggestion! The Deadline for voting on the Cover design is Monday 6. 10. 2008 midnight-ish.

So, how many people took their time to express their opinion? - 17! I am missing opinion of other 100 people.

So, it looks that Fionn is the most successfull designer here. I would like to ask Fionn in name of all participants to read all comments and to provide the final version of the cover design. Yes, the book will be 8" x 10" landscape. If you need specification of the picture sizes, I would like to ask you to use Blurb software. It is "too simple" program to provide you with it's specification.

I wasn't around the last while to even think of any other designs to submit, but seeing that one has been chosen i'll be contacting the book designer and hopefully we can drive things forward
