Laptop shuts down when battery is installed

Hi. I have a Dell Inspiron laptop which will boot up and run fine when the battery is not installed but as soon as the battery is inserted, it just dies.

It won't boot once the battery is in place. In fact, if the battery is installed, as soon as you insert the power lead, the green light in the PSU just goes off.

I thought it was a faulty battery so I got a new one but it does the same thing. I also checked the charger with one which I know is working so it's not the charger.

Anyone come across this problem before? Thanks in advance for any replies.
