I'd go for the D90 over the D80 personally! Read the reviews on dpreview.com You can also compare the 40D and D80 against each other, or the D80 v. the D90. It should give you some ideas/suggestions/questions!

You may be liable for import taxes from USA, be careful if you buy on Ebay from States.
I use a D80 bought in Dublin, look on adverts.ie for some nice secondhand cameras. There is a D300 at a reasonable price going for sale at present. Worth a look. Best of luck with whatever you purchase.

I'd go for the 40d, but I'd be biased in saying that since I have one myself. But you'll also find that most people on this forum use Canon anyways. It's obviously better. (here we go....)

Anyways, ebay is a good spot to buy cameras, just don't buy them from the USA as you will get taxed heavily when they go through customs.

So just say you're getting a 40d. What kind of lenses would you want? Maybe you could try getting a body and lens separate.

Here's a link to a 40d body on ebay from a very good seller. I've gotten a 40d and a lens from him. No problems....

How bad is this tax you speak of?

Best advice I can give you is go to a shop with a good range, try out all the options, see what feels good in your hand, check out the local prices, check out the online prices (bearing in mind that you may get stung for tax), then buy the Nikon!

When you buy the CANON 40D from the link I gave you, you wont have to pay tax.

    If you
buy the CANON 40D from the Americans you linked to, the charge will be 21% VAT and duty charges and administration charges from anPost or whoever delivers the package.

Also, if i buy the body, what lenses would people recommend? I would be looking for a wide angle one for starters but something that could be used all the time would also be handy, anything i should be looking out for?

The main reason the first lot of ebay stuff appealed to me was because it had everything, lenses and a load of memory.would it still work out cheap buying the camera, 2-3 lenses and about 8GB of memory?maybe a battery pack thrown in as well

    Hello all,

I just got my lovely student loan for college equipment and im now in the market for a new SLR, I'm stuck between a Canon 40D or Nikon D80, I'm also looking on ebay as well cause there a few good deals on there from some of the shops.

If anyone has any help for me PLEASE dont hesitate to tell me, I'm a bit lost on the whole camera front:o
I have the Nikon D80. I wouldn't recommend it. Buy the equivalent to it the Canon 400D. It's a much better camera & it going cheap now in the shops.

What was your problem with the D80? I know its old now but most D80 users love the things!

Yeah Canon 400d r 40d would be spot on.

Come on even Jackie Chan uses CANON!!!!

You're better off with 2 x 4GB cards than one 8GB. Also buy Sandisk. They're the best. 8GB card will just make you lazy and all your shots will stay on the card. Then inevitably one day the card will f**k up and your last year of pics will be gone!
2 or 3 lenses and a camera will cost a lot!! What do you need? The 17-85mm is a great range for everyday use. Or you can get something like an 18-200mm. Also, do you have any friends or family with a Canon or Nikon? Both are the best really in terms of camera equipment, but knowing someone with one can mean that you have the loan of a lens from time to time!

That will only happen if you're lazy though so I'm sure he has nothing to worry about. What's the point of keeping all your shots on the card for a whole year? Would you not have a look at them on the pc? I transfer mine onto a pc anyways, I thought it was common practice.

    See that is INSANE.

I thought the same before I got my D90. Using its 720p video mode chews up memory like crazy :)

It was really an exaggeration of a point. But I know people who have all their pics on the card. I'm not one of them. I seldom bother reviewing them on the LCD any more, can't see anything on that!

I transfer all my pics to PC, then I delete 'em from there over time.
So my only place I see them is on pix.ie
If their server ever went belly up I'd just start again.
Even when I buy new pcs I transfer nothing over or if I am reformatting I wipe everything.
    I am lazy like that.
