    Hi,

Moving into my first winter of outdoor training and was wondering what gear do people see as essential /recommend for this time of year.
I can make a guess at gloves, hats etc. but I was hoping for more specifics like a particular item/brand they are satisifed with for performance and value.
I want to have the gear ready for when that first very cold night arrives. ;)

    Thanks in advance
    B.

Layering is very important for winter training. I'm a big fan of the Under Armour cold weather tops. You can get them in Arnotts and Elverys.

I have seen those under armour tops and am definitely going to pick some up.

What about for the legs, Do under armour provide anything similar?

plain old-fashioned running tights are often good enough for the legs. You're generating a lot of heat in those big muscles. I don't use gloves for running but I do wear a base layer (under armour or helly hanson) and if it's wet or very cold a running jacket. I'm also a bit more caerful with socks and trainers. Wet, cold feet are not fun.

Running tights work for me too - I'd wear them on the bike too.

The most useful and used piece of clothing I bought has been the Look sleeveless gilet. It's a windproof front which really takes the chill out of the wind. It is a bit water resistant too. It is very light.
I have long sleeved Nike Pro tops to wear under this.

Cycling arm warmers might work for you.

I like cycling arm warmers too. You can pull them down to your wrists if you overheat.

I go with the base layer (Nike Pro top) and ASICs rain jacket, ASICs gloves, Nike running cap.

Have not really got the bottom half sorted, though - still find tights a bit suspect! I'm careful with the socks and trainers too but still get wet after a few miles in the rain.

Ran with a torch last year, but would like to get a head-torch this year - any one recommend one? Also need a lightweight reflective top - anything has to be better than the builders jacket I had last year!

Judging by the rain here today might be the first day to get kitted out for the winter training.

bth, we have quite a few head torches at home and they are much of a muchness in terms of brightness and durability.

running tights are a must when the cold weather comes in.
gore jacket i wear is class and have it 3 years.
thin running gloves and cap instead of wolly hat as i tend to overheat
    in them.
compression tops over hyped in my opinion.got a nice craft pro zero top
    that works well.

Ron Hill tracksters...... best bit of winter kit ever. Cant go too far wrong with a Helly Hansen lifa top either. My adidas cycling jacket is a grand top for the rain too.

Thanks for all the good information folks. Time for a bit of shopping next week I thinks as I nearly froze last night.

Are people inclinde to shop for their gear on-line or on the high street? I know Dublin has maybe 2 specialist shops in the City centre that I know of so not much competition.

usually on line at sites like wiggle.co.uk. Some of the e-bay shops are quite good. I tend to go mad at things like marathon expos too ... big fan of the bargain bins!

    I know of the following

    - Runways on Parnell St., D1
    - Elverys on Suffolk St. D2

Arnotts also stock some gear but stock seemed thin enough the last time I tried.

I believe there is a shop in Terenure (?) and Bray (AmphibianKing) also but I dont know these.

Mick Dowlings is the one in Terenure, small enough shop but always have what I need

Try a Petzl, they do specific lightweight running head-torches. Here. I've never tried their running ones, but have used the mountaineering ones are they are great quality, Great Outdoors and Outdoor Adventure Store both stock Petzl, give them a try.
