ZV plates 4 digits

Just back from the VRO in Tallaght and have my Citroen finally registered. Following on from previous ZV registration chat, four digits are still available for Dublin.

As far as I saw on the computer, the 2nd Dublin ZV allocation runs from 7201-17200. When I was there on 22/09/2008, next up was ZV8972 (non-ZV option for 1978 was 78-D-1156 - too many digits!). On my return visit today I was issued ZV8990. So there's just over a 1000 left before it hits 5 digits. Should take a while to use up, unless there's a mass rush :pac:

The only other place known to have some of their 4 digit allocation left (as mentioned by BSPOKE20) was Waterford City. Any others left?

Now I'm off to sort out some red plates :D

Get your skates on lads! ZV10001 is coming up soon! :p

I mentioned on here a few weeks ago that I got a 4 digit number from the Furry Park, Santry office. ZV 8933. :)

    Sometime between and 26/08/2008 and 09/09/2008 ;)

If you can nail a date against it I'm sure the number plate connoisseurs would appreciate it. It will give us an idea how quickly they're being snapped up now. Looks like about 2 a day.

Might have been the 18th of August when I changed it. I'll have a look at the receipt when I get home.

I just changed my 64D to ZV 9231 today, so as of 27/05/09 there are only 769 left in Dublin.

Actually make that 768 as there was a lovely Citroen DS Familae or whatever, the 7 seater estate thing being done too.

I reckon folk who want a ZV, or to reg a foreign reg'd car they've had for a while will get them done in the next few months so I think they will get through the 700 odd a bit faster than previously.

^^^^ I don't think so, because it'll be offset by fewer cars coming in.

There's still a small amount of other 1st allocations left, need to find a buddy somewhere remote :D

I got off my pie-arse at the weekend and finished doing my plates:

I wondered and meant to ask before, but why do older/classic cars have a ZV registration. if your car was previously registered as, say, 1972 D ***
why change it? Do you have to or do you have a choice? My feeling would be to stay with the original if that was the case. Some time back I enquired about changing my reg for an old reg that might now be out of service or obsolete, if the vehicle it had belonged to was scrapped, but no dice! I wanted 90 D 735, to replace my present 90 D ****. A check on cartell says it belongs to a Renault 5. Either way, it cant be done, so said the girl at the motor reg office.

You dont have to change but the ZV style(4 digit not the 5 digits..) is more in keeping with the older style of registrations in this country, untill tey ruined it by going 5 digit, but thats another argument..:p

You can only go from 66D1234 to ZV,not ZV to 66D1234.

The guy up there told me that they basically have to de-register the car and re-record all the details again.

    Nice plates there MacP

So if your car is de-registered does that mean your old 64 D number can be reissued?

(...And the first you know of it will be when you get points for speeding in a car you don't own.)

where can red number plates be got?

Ask Seamus at Europlates. 01 825 1804 (see the suppliers links somewhere) I'm sure he can sort you out. He sorted me out with the backings and painted digits as I wanted to rivet them myself.

Pressed digit plates are reasonably priced, but if you want to go with ACE aluminium peak digits painted black, then they'll cost quite a bit more and take a while to put together. I've no idea if you can get black plastic semi-peak digits in the correct larger size (same as UK pre '63, but they're all white or silver)

The correct old fashioned size is 3 1/2" high digits on a 21" x 5" backing plate. Anything other size is half a job ;) It'll work with the correct letter spacings for anything up to 6 digits. If you are lumbered with 7 digits and don't have a "1" in the mix to help you, then the next best thing is a slightly smaller backing with UK style 3 1/8" digits (which is exactly the modification the UK did when the added a year letter onto the end of the plates).

    A pressed set looks like:

Smaller backings, 3 1/2" digits (use of these backings was rejected as it would have had insufficient margins around the digits):

My temporary set. Doesn't look at all period and I'm not a member of the defence forces ;) :

my own opinion is that all the cars should have been issued age related numbers from scrapped vehicles( eg, 729 RZI or IF 2207) in their respective counties in the Ist place. Now that ZV has gone 5 digit, its gone AWOL :o

I did see some brand new NOS (New Old Stock) red blank plates for sale in an autojumble for 10 euros each recently, from a closed dealer in waterford, from the early 80s.

They dont re-issue the number if you change to ZV, apparantly they are always linked together to the one vehicle.

The problem with re-issue is that prior to the scrappage scheme there were no Certificates of destruction issued, they could be gotr but were of no value. So folk who crashed/scrapped or dumped cars were not obliged to inform the authorities. Therefore the authorities do not know for fact whether cars that haven't been taxed under the new regime since 1993 exist in someones garage or not.

The computer system used basically linked the number on the Cert of Dest. to the reg number and it is locked which means it cant be edited afterwards with details from another car.

Thats the way it was explained to me anyways.

    Silly..............but true !
