I was just looking at the first round scores on the BBC website. Is this a ranking tournament? How come Ken Doherty is not taking part? Nice to see Williams winning his first round, he is making a bit of a comeback in recent times.

Yes, it is a ranking event but Ken Doherty did not qualify, nor has he qualified for the upcoming Grand Prix. :(

That's how much of a difference from being in the top 16 and not. Only a few payers have ever fallen out and got back in to it.

He's going to have to get used to the qualifying cubicles in Prestatyn and quick.

BTW the Shanghai Masters is being covered live & extensively on Eurosport. :)

I thought that since there were 32 players in the event that he would not have to qualify as he is ranked 20 something? And wasn't there a wildcard round? He wasn't in that?
And White qualified! He was unlucky not to win his first round.

I assume the way it works is the top 16 qualifiy automatically. Then another 16 players come through the preliminaries and they play the top 16 in the first round...so Doherty would have had to win all his qualifiers and then play a top 16 player in the 1st round. But, alas, he didn't.
