The CD/DVD RW drive on my Dell Inspiron 6400 has broken and I am too broke to replace it.

Just wondering has anyone on here got a broken Inspiron laptop with a drive that would fit mine?

    It would be greatly appreciated

You don’t necessarily need a Dell DVD/.RW, you can check on eBay for compatible models. Dell could use any brand such as NEC, Panasonic, Philips, and stick its own bezel on it. Some brands will not accept the Dell Bezel which would mean that you might need to file the front of the DVD/RW to fit it in place.

I replaced mine with one I got on EBay for e40 a few years back, you should get them cheaper now. You have to transfer the mountings from your old DVD/RW. You will also have to remove the key board to get at the DVD/RW to change it.

    Thanks for the reply

Is this difficult to do? Is it worth the hassle?

It is just that this is such a common type of laptop there is surely someone out there with one with a broken screen or some other problem that they don't use anymore

Pending on which model, You would put it in in 5 minutes with small Philips screw driver. You need to remove a few small screws behind the screen to release the trimming that covers the keyboard screws. Lift the keyboard to get at t6he DVD RW release screw.

If you go into Control panel/System/System properties and device management you should be able to find the make of DVD RW. As I said before these are not made by Dell. You might be lucky to get the exact one on EBay

Is the 6400 not like the 6000 in the respect of that there is just one screw to release the DVD drive which is located on the underside of the laptop?

    Handier again.

it was. Had to remove my drive in my 6000 to return it to a courier who brought me a replacement from Dell as mine wouldn't write to DVD. Great service so it was.
