Itunes & id3 tags issues

Hey there, couldn't find a satisfactory answer to this one online so hopefully some of you ninjas would be capable enough to helpRecently bought an ipod classic 160gb, already have all my cd's turned in to mp3s, many of them I did years ago before I had a good encoder that did the names & id3 tags, and when I say many I am talking about a lot of albums here! (been geeking it for a good bit)

I don't like the sync function on itunes (and when I say don't like I mean more like don't understand) - I have considerably more music on my system than I have space on my ipod & plus it's not all mine (some is my oh's) - so I just made a list on my ipod in itunes & dragged & dropped groups of files into it, which then just copied themselves on to the ipod, no problemo.
Where my problem is, that any of the albums that I put on from all those years ago, many of them don't have id3 tags which makes finding songs difficult, as you can imagine

So my question is; is there any software which I can download/pay for/whatever that will go through the songs on my ipod and work out the names/albums etc, or do I literally have to go through them file by file.If not, is there a programme that will do the above on my pc itself, so I can just check the names/id3's to work correctly on my computer & then move them on the the (wiped) ipod so all the song names will be ok.

sorry for the long windedness of this, but it is melting my head, at least a third of my music is all minus song names or other important information & the thought of going through every album on my pc and dealing with the id tags is driving me to distraction!

You could try mp3tag, it has an autotag feature where it goes through an online database and tries to find the best matching info for your music...obviously it's not 100% accurate as it's having to work with very little information to begin with so expect some faults.

Mactard, appreciate that - for all these songs I already have both the song names, album names - pretty much everything, I encoded these myself, and they are in folders by band name > album name > then the mp3 files themselves have the song names and generally numbers as well - it's just that the mp3 tags are incorrect/non-existant on a vast amount of them - is the programme you mention still good for what I need to do?

Take it for a test drive, it's totally free... make a copy of one of your folders and run the programme and see if it works for you...

Given your structure you may be able to tag your songs based on that, i know you can autotag based on filename, but I do not know if you can autotag based on folder names too....
