Trial Voip Accounts

I have recentley gotten trial voip accounts with both blueface and freespeech.

I am trying to set up both accounts with a softphone using an irish broadband 3mb internet connection with static ip.

the configuration settings i'm entering into the softphone would be

    SIP Port: 5060
    Audio Port: 10000 (starting)

and then for each of the providers i change the config to
    blueface
    server: sip.blueface.com
    username: mykraniu
    sip password: xxxxxx

    or
    freespeech
    server: freespeech.ie
    username: 6691300
    sip password: xxxxxx

I've tried configuring the softphone with my static ip, enabling stun server, turning nat on the sip and audio ports on and off at the Netgear WNR854T router. Tried the softphone (Express Talk) on several computers. tried X-Lite on several computers. Tried putting computers in the DMZ, although i can't see how that would be different from port forwarding. I also turned off some firewall the router was implementing. all to no avail.

I'm ultimately trying to set up asterisk server on the inside of the LAN. But unfortunately that seems like the easy part now.

If anyone has advice i will of course be eternally greatful.

X-lite can be infuriating alright. Sometimes it'll work straight away for people while it will drive others to an early grave. You shouldn't normally have to do anything unusual with your firewall settings and generally it's just a setting or two somewhere in X-lite that needs to be changed.

Seeing as you've been trying it with Blueface, have you had a look at :

Well i tried hooking a computer up outside the NAT directley plugged into irish broadband, and it worked in a second. So it is definitely a NAT/Firewall issue with the NETGEAR WNR854T.

Does anyone else succsesfuly use this router model with blueface/freespeech?

I'd doubt that the problem has anything to do with your specific model of firewall. You'll most likely have the same issues with whatever make/model you use. Have you had a look at the links above? There are some specific references about what to try when operating behind firewalls.

Well there is just one reference to what to do behind a firewall. it just tells you to choose what stun server you want to use. i tried the STUN server there, the stun server from freespech, and the stunservers which the automatic network detect from my other softphone picks up on.

as far as i can tell, STUN is just there to tell your internal software what your external ip is.

I've also tried two other firewall/nat workarounds which the express talk phone allows you to use instead of stun. setting static external ip and using UPnP to detect.

I tried all these settings with and with and without ports on the router mapped onto ports on the local machine.

more important i think than the model of the router is what type of NAT it uses.
there are several different types of NAT, which perform different type of mapping operations.

This particular router has two firewalls which it uses to filter internet traffic. one called an SPI firewall can be toggled on and off, the other isn't explicitly mentioned, so i think it just means the standard port blocking functionality of the router.

I use NAT translation to forward the ports from the router. now i do this on standard ports like 80 and 21 for http and ftp servers and if i visit canyouseeme.or it shows that these ports are open.

so the port forwarding works fine for these ports.

however i forward port 5060 to the machine with the SIP client and canyouseeme.org says connection refused cannot see your service.
so i am thinking that perhaps because i am running a SIP client and not a SIP server internally the NAT mapping doesn't allow the connection. for some reason.

I'd be happier with a linux firewall/router anyway. wou can configure it to your hearts content, and you will always know (or be able to find out with sufficient hair/teeth pulling) what is going on in the network. with a closed source router who can tell.

wow i just did ramble on there, didn't i.
