    Hi,

I signed up for the historical society this week, and am looking forward to all their terrific guests.

I was just wondering, do you have to purchase tickets for each individual event ( Damien Rice on Thursday) or do you just show up early?

It seems like a lot of people have signed up for them, but their room is infinitely big.

    Thanks in advance.

Nah, once your a member, you'll reveive e-mails telling you in advance who will speak, and visit e.t.c. Generally speaking you'll get in, however, in the case of some high profile speakers, you'll have to get there early, otherwise you simply won't get in. The room isn't that big, and college will often refuse permission to hold the event else where. As was the case with Ian Paisly last year.

A little late in answering, but just to clarify - the tickets for Damien Rice (which were free, incidentally, as basically all Hist events are) were basically a one-off thing. We managed to get permission to hold the event in the chapel (more room and infinitely better acoustics than any other available venue), but with freshers' week stands right in front of it and front square being a giant pile of mess, trying to get a few hundred people to queue in a remotely orderly fashion would have been mental. Hence the tickets in advance. The only other time in the last 3 years I've seen a Hist event ticketed was Ian Paisley's address last year, where it was the easiest way to vet non-college students and keep things orderly for security reasons. 99% of the time, duffman is right - just show up to an event and you'll be able to wander in (though naturally for big guests getting there early is advised).

And sadly our room isn't infinitely big; it holds around 220 people depending on how cleverly the chairs are arranged, but there's always a few events each year at which we have to turn people away, particularly during Freshers' Week.
