    Hello,
I am currently looking at a Leupold 4.5x14x50 illuminated reticle scope on ebay. The scope is brand new and comes with flip up leupold lens covers and mounting rings. I should be able to get it for €450 all in. Is this a good deal and will the illumnated scope be good for lamping foxes. Thanks for any advice or help.

I have bought a lot of stuff off cabelas over the years and am very happy with them. This scope is from a shop in texas and they have a very high rating and customer service. Thanks for the advice

    Hi Rawhead

I bought a VXIII 4-14x50 last year usint this link
    http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=2055120174

It doesnt have the illuminated retical, having said that I am very happy with it overall. That price sounds a bit too good to be true so be carfull - now maybe its a great deal just be carefull.
    Regards

Personally OP I wouldn't touch that seller with a barge pole. He has 11 feedbacks as a buyer and only 1 sale as a seller last year.

    Not worth the risk imho

Rawhead, you quote €450 for scope, which equals $775, plus @$40 postage and @$20 insurance.

When that arrives in Portlaoise (UPS,Parcel Post Express etc) that $835 gets converted to €835 (not legal buts that's the way they do it) and you have to pay import duty, VAT, excise duty and a handling charge (on everything including P+P and insurance), which all comes to around 30%, so your total bill then becomes @ €765.

Is is now such a good deal?

Dunno if this link still works, its blocked for me in work.
    http://www.leupold.com/Counterfeit_2006_Sales.ppt

Also someone did a write up on it before:
    http://reviews.ebay.com/Leupold-counterfeite-scopes-how-to-get-it-right_W0QQugidZ10000000006244352

It seems to me that the main model of scope in the Leupold range that are copied are the Mark 4 Range! they are copied for many reasons mainly becasue they are millateary spec! I have seen a couple of Vari-x III that were suspect, buy & large however it's the Mark 4's

below is a quick quide on how & what to look out for when buying a Leupold Mark 4 scope!

we'll start at the fron't & work backwards!

on the fron't Eyebell, there's a ring on all leupold scopes! some are gold in the various models!

But the Mark 4's & the Vari-X III tactical scopes all have a black ring with black text that can be seen on close inspection.

it could read Leupold Mark 4 3.5-10x40 M1 LRT IR broken down it means the following

this mean that this scope has a magnification range between 3.5x upto 10x magnification. the scope has a 40mm objective bell, it has M1 Turrets which adjust at 1/4" intervials at 100 yards, it's a Long Range Tactical Scope with an alluminated reticule.

on the counterfeite they don't have a ring! instead the have a slight recess & the information is eteched into the metal & is silver in colour! please see this linkLeupold, picture front bell of counterfaite scope

next we move to the turret housing!

the 1st think to notice is that the scope has a 30mm tube & it has a sidewheel on the right side of the scope! on a real Leupold it has a small Leupold badge on it! however the copies just have a whole. the other thing to notice on a copy is that they have distances marked out around the sidewheel. on a real mark 4 they just have dot's there's no numbering on the sidewheel.

the turrent vary according to the turret type. in appearance theirs 2, the M1 Turrets& M2/M3 turrets (look the same)! On the counterfaite scope the elevation turret on the top of the scope has the wrong labeling on! instead is having the numbers follow round the turrent they are actually on their side & look odd! That's becasue they are infact printed for the windage turrets which appear to be correct!

one of the biggest tell tail signs of a counterfaite is under the Turret housing! On a real Mark 4 scope it has it's serial number & the year it was manufactured! thats it! NOTHEING ELSES if you see a scope with this underneigh it's 100% counterfaiteLeupold turret housing if it says LEUPOLD MARK 4 the the scope spec e.g. 3.5-10x40M1 it's not the real item & it's fake!

if you comes across any of these pointers on an auction for a scope contact eBay straight away for advice. don't bid on the item!

Love Cabelas. Unbeatable.... but the bad news is they dont ship gun parts and if Im not mistaken I think they include scopes in that. I once order these handy gun oil wipes (like wet wipes) and they wouldnt send them for security reasons!!!!!!

when you buy a leupold you buy the lifetime garauntee they do not hastle you they re place it or fix the only thing i can think of for your prob is the cross hairs if they are two thin you wont pick up point of aim quick but leupold will replace them for 120 dollers but there is a lot of fake scopes out there you have to be sure it is a real leupold you can pm me if you want more info
