When I tried to switch it on last nite nothing happened, normally lights up, had a listen at the back and the fan was moving slowly. Anyone got any ideas what it could be, I dont want to loose the 20000+ tunes I have on it:(

Sorry should have stated that it was internal

I don't understand your question. The topic says "hard drive not working" but the post sounds like it's your PC that's not working. Internal harddrives don't have any 'lights' on them.

I believe he means the led on the front of the box, OP If the fan is turning slowly it does appear that you have a power problem, open up the box and check all the connections, unplug each one and blow any dust that may have gotten in off, you would be surprised how often this works! Make sure the PC is unplugged than you are earthed before doing this however ;)

Yeah but he confirmed that it's an internal drive.

If the drive is in an external box and you have a slow fan then it should be possible to :

    a) take the drive out and plug it directly into your PC if you have a spare IDE/SATA connection lead available

    b) purchase a new, empty external drive box

I mean the led on the front of the PC, on some there is a little green one that indicates power to the internal HDD and flashes when the HDD is being read from or written to ;)

So you switch the PC on and it's the fan at the back of the PC that isn't turning?

The only reason you believe that you have a HDD problem is because the light doesn't come on?

Is it booting to your OS?

    ;)

Edit: OP I doubt it's the hard drive, if it was, the PC would have powered up and you would have gotten an error saying there was a problem with the HDD, so it is more likely that it is the power supply or the board, anything else should have displayed an error or you would have heard a series of beeps, the amount of beeps indicating where the problem lies!

Well, your PC might or might not be fcuked, but there is a pretty good chance your hard drive is OK, bet you remember to make backups in future ;) Let us know how you get on. Good luck!
