it all depends on ur level of playing and your budget. Give us an idea on what kinda music your interested in ? some guitars are better for blues others for heavy metal

What kind of music do you like to play?
    What's your max budget?

The usual recommendation this neck of the woods is the Pacifica.
Do a search on this forum.

Seems ok for the price, but just be aware that MF won't ship to Ireland.
    It's €249 on Thomann :)

What's out there that does tickle your fancy?

Have a search on Thomann for your price range and see what's there.

www.adverts.ie is always worth a look, if you don't mind second hand.

Have read mixed reviews of Epi's. Played one or two in shops ages ago and I never really took to lp's, just not my cup of tea.
If you are really set on one of those, drop into a few shops and get a feel of one and see if it suits ya.

To go along with a new electric can anyone recommend any decent amps?

I've heard one of these and it packs a powerful punch for its size. I was a bit surprised by how nice it sounded (and how loud it could go) to be honest.

Edit: Mods, would it be an idea to sticky this thread as other posters with similiar questions can goto first as reference.

I just got one of these :

    http://www.adirondackguitar.com/electrics/lace/huntington_amber.htm

One of the best strat copies I've had, and the pick-ups are excellent. Adirondack ships it to Ireland for $90, so all in your looking at $265 -€188 at todays rate.

I presume you also had to pay import fee's (customs & VAT)?

I got caught for €34, sometimes you get charged, sometimes you get away with it.I think its still well worth it for the money.

Ah right. More often than not you get charged, although the last time I purchased a guitar from overseas I didn't get charged the fees. :)
