might be worth asking the owner

Tried that; it's a garage, and I got the reply that they measured it once from the back of the front seats, and it was about 6 feet. Therefore they reckon that the back would be roughly 4 feet.

I doubt that you could fit the rear seats and footwell into 2 ft! They are probably pushing for a sale. I dont think you'll get away with commercialising it without taking out the back seats aswell

    Thanks for that.

I actually took a trip down to customs at lunchtime on Monday, and they told me that in order to qualify for the €50 VRT:

    a) The GVW would have to be in excess of 3,449KG (taken from the chassis plate).
    b) The cargo area would need to be in excess of 45% of the length of the wheelbase
    c) There would hve to be a solid bulkhead between the back seat and the cargo area, and the conversion would need to be properly done (I assume this to mean that bulkhead would be welded into place, windows would be properly vinyled, and the floor would be wood or metal).

If any of those conditions weren't met, then the VRT would be 13.3% of the OMSP.

I was using a 1993 Hilux Surf for my example, on which full VRT would be €1,098, and 13.3% would be €406. Because the GVW is only 1,890KG, it wouldn't qualify for the €50 VRT.

So, once I have the distance between the back seat and the door, I can go back to customs and confirm a VRT price.

Realistically, the difference in VRT isn't colossal, but it will be used to carry goods, and the commercal tax is handy for the likes of loading bays (not to mention the €1,000+ per annum!)

That doesnt make a lot of sence. My Nissan terrano is taxed and insured as a commercial jeep and its alot lighter than that Hilux, smaller too, so are most of the other commercial jeeps out there. I dont think they are giving you the criteria for the correct class.

most passenger jeeps were taxed as commercials even with seats but the net is tied tight and nothing gets through

i was going doing the same with the landcruiser amazon,it has the correct ratio of commercial to seating space but the guys in cork said no

the doe centres are now liable for false declarations and the customs boys are usind seizure warrants to pick up any doctored ones

you have to have 2 seats only or 5 seats with a bulkhead behind in pick up form(crewcab) so they have closed the loop
you might be able to sneak it in now but you will get caught at the next DOE
