Yep, and its all about the 'look at us' factor. Building that high is very uneconmical, could have saved millions by building 2 towers side by side. If you look at the worlds tallest buildings, it was the sears tower in chicago for ages, and that was knocked off the top by taipei 101 and the petronas towers, which arent too much taller. this thing dwarfs all of them, and also has at the base what will be the worlds biggest shopping centre.

uneconomical maybe, but it will put dubai firmly on the world map and stand alongside such things as the eiffel tower, statue of liberty and cn tower. It will bring tourists to dubai by the millions. dubai has gambled billions in the hope that it will become a tourist mecca (something like las vegas without gambling and drinking :)) when the oil runs out. me i just can't wait to climb to the top, i have already been to been inside the 1825ft cn tower but at over 2600ft this will be amazing

Ironically enough, not many people can afford to go and stay in Dubai these days due to the price of oil (etc., and so on and so forth).
    Nice picture though :)

Just imagine arriving in the cab to start a days work and realising that you've left your sandwiches/fags at the front door :pac:

I would say it would be horrible if the crane started wobbling from a storm and your in it.

Imagine the feeling of helplessness when the crane is falling from the very top and you're in it !

From that height, you may even have a better chance if you had a parachute - enough freefall time for one to open!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,354 ✭✭✭smellslikeshoes

Gotta wonder how long its gonna be before someone builds a tower beyond our engineering capabilities and it comes crashing down without outside interference. Looking at the height of that even though its still to get higher makes me think a point like that isn't too far away.

I wouldn't want it to go rusty! especially near the bottom!

and as for stress fractures, lets not go there....

I remember watching extreme engineering on discovery about 2 years ago, they were on about a 1km high skyscraper in Hong Kong, they said "this dream could become a reality in 100 years". Look at Dubai they have one now, when its finished it will be only 50 metres under 1KM.
Its amazing what they can do.

You'll love this one then, it's a couple of guys working on the antenna on the Empire State building in 2001-

There was one they were talking about building in Hong Kong, that was shaped like a huge pyramid. Really tall but it had a wide base to compensate it. Seems like a much safer idea to me.

Who builds the crane to take down the other crane?
Then how does that crane get down?

they undo a few bolts and someone just pushes it over. the really crappy job is being the guy at the bottom who has to catch it. :D

One of those guys in the Rockefeller photo was from near Gort, Co. Galway. There's also talk that a second of them is also Irish but it's not been confirmed yet.

If you look even closer you'll see the lad on the far right is drinking a nagan.

If you look even closer, you'll see that the disciple to Jesus' left is actually a woman.

that was tokyo it was called X-Seed 4000 but it was a dream project and impossible to build, it was to be over 13,000ft high (about 1000ft higher than mount fuji)

That looks too cool not to build. It would need an evil mastermind's HQ perched at the top though.

I saw one of those "how" type programes, it takes itself down, part of the tower is telescopic and can rise & drop the height of a section of tower at a time allowing these sections to be added or removed as needed. only the last piece needs another crane to remove.

Here a helicopter may be used!
