Abus are an old German lock company and I wouldn't be too concerned about the brand. Their security ratings go from 1-15 I think so you would want one in the upper third of the ratings.

I think there's a big fashion element to the Kryptonite locks at the moment and I don't think the equivalent rated locks from either company would be much better or worse than the other.

I've an abus granite chain lock I leave wrapped on the bicycle rack. Quite happy with it, seriously chunky and the padlock has survived several years on that rack in all elements and still works.

Abus are a highly respected lock company, if that is what you are worried about. Only thing that would put me off is the price, but can't really go wrong with them otherwise.

I'm using a granit plus 51 u-lock from abus, fortunately it didn't have to be tested yet but looks pretty solid overall, the rubber around the shackle and plastic casing on the crossbar won't mess up your paintjob.

I have an abus Granit motorcycle chain - expensive and way too heavy to carry around - but it's good for locking the bikes up at home. I purchased it when i had a motorbike, it had won the group test award for it's category in one of the leading uk motorbike mags.

Let's hope the thieves don't have 4ft bolt croppers:

I recently purchased a €70 Trelock, then read that it can be prised open in a few seconds. Doh!

If I summon the funds to replace it, I'll probably go for a combination of:

    Kryptonite New York Fahgettaboudit Mini

Pinhead Four Pack Locking Skewer Set

Anyone know where the Fahgettaboudit Mini can be purchased in Dublin?

Good viewing. Goes to show. Interesting that they can't really recommend any chain. See the lads need a lot of room to work - make sure your Bike lock and chain is as arkward for them as possible. Increase the time they need to get it.

Ah - there is a link to these guys http://almax-security-chains.co.uk at that the start of that vid. Wonder if their chains are as good as they say.

3.5-5 mins with angle grinder, but otherwise impenetrable.

    Chain is 4.4Kgs per metre, so 0.7m = 3kg + lock weight.

    Am considering coupling with this:

    http://www.wiggle.co.uk/p/Cycle/7/Abus_Chain_Lock_Bag/5360022247/

This would have the big benefit of being easily detachable for A-A rides, and hanging from the top tube, something which I can't do with my U-lock, leaving space for 2 bottle cages.

eta: More here http://www.motorcyclenews.com/MCN/News/newsresults/archive/87883/88985/88986/88993/?&R=EPI-88993. Seems the lock might add another kg, so that's 4kg in total. Eek! At least it's not rotating mass.
