Ok I have my test in just over a week, I will be doing it in the SGS test centre in Finglas.

    I have a big question

I have driven in Finglas a few times, and I have always looked out for a speed limit sign but never saw any. This includes the main big-ish road through Finglas....the road you are on when you turn on to this road is 60kph.

I don't want to drive at this speed on the road incase the speed limit is 50kph!

Does anyone know the test route and know for sure the speed limit?

I know the routes,If it says 60 its 60, there are some speed limit signs in places but not everywhere. Most of the area is 50k. If its a 60 and you only do 50 you may get a grade 2 fault for not maintaining progress.

The N2 is a 60kph limited and all the side roads have a 50kph but the industrial estate where the test centre is, has a speed limit of 30kph - i think.

all the estates and roads off the N2 have a speed signs, as you turn of the N2

i did my test there, im pretty sure the road outside the industrial estate is 60km.
i found them really nice in that centre, and the route was grand.
went into the estate on 3rd exit of the little round about, did all the routines and then back out to the industrial estate.

i passed so i was very happy with them!

best of luck, dont worry too much!

I passed my test last week with SGS Finglas, got 2 grade 2 marks.

I only saw two places where speed limit signs are displaced, one is on N2 for 60kph and anther one is on Mellowes Road for 50kph.

There is no clear guidance on how fast or how slow you should proceed if there's no speed limit signs, it depends on your own judgement, i.e. within residential area with loads stationary vehicles, slow down as appropriate otherwise keep up with the speed but not too fast. Always observe surroundings, it's important to show the tester that you are capable of having good control of your own vehicle when potential hazards emerges.

There are many mini-roundabouts, they might be quite dodgy but practice enough, you will be fine.

There are threes routes I know in Finglas:

1, come from Finglas/M50 roundabout on N2 pass the roundabout(where Lidl is) take second exit, keep to the left and go on to Mellowes Road, then take the third exit at the first mini roundabout, then immediately turn right and proceed through Casement Road to Barry Ave. do turnabout on Barry Avenue or reverse, can't remember where I got back from.

2,come from Finglas/M50 roundabout on N2 pass the roundabout(where Lidl is) take second exit, keep to the left and go on to Mellowes Road, then take the second exit at the first mini roundabout, and take right turn onto Barry Road then take immediate left turn onto Mellowes Ave. Proceed and turn onto Mellowes Road, turnabout will be on Mellowes Road within the residential area. Then turn right on the next first turn onto Cardiffbridge Road then immediately turn left onto Church St. Proceed to the first mini roundabout and take first exit onto Finglaswood Rd, keep going to the next mini roundabout and take third exit back onto Mellowes Road. Then the test will guide you back onto N2, now you know the way to get back to SGS.

3,ome from Finglas/M50 roundabout on N2 pass the roundabout(where Lidl is) take second exit and straight on, you will be driving underneath the overhead bridge(Mellowes Road), turn right onto Wellmount Road, pass the first mini roundabout and turn left onto Dunsink Ave,then turn right immediately, keep going until you reach Dunsink Park. Turnabout and reverse will be performed here, either Dunsink Green or Dunsink Gardens.

In fact, the route I was tested on was the first one, the latter two got from friends don't know if they are 100% accurate, it all depends on the tester and traffic conditions, however, you can still use it as a guidance to practice.:)

    Best of luck with test!

ps: if you are not familiar with names of roads, check them on google map, that what i did for this post. :)

you wont get a grade 2 for going 10km under the limit!!!!

I dont know the route but I assume you are doing at least one pre-test?? Would you not ask the instructor? Thats why (s)he is there!

It's highly possible get a grade 2 for not keeping up with 60kph if it requires you to coz all other road users are driving upto the speed limit, failing to follow means that you are not competent, also you are delaying other road users as well.

Going at 50 within a 60 zone should be avoided, that's 17% slower than normal. It's ok to go over 1 or 2 kph but if you drive under 55 at 60 zone, you could potentially get grade 2 fault.:D

Well, you know what, I stand corrected!!

I didnt know that, which worries me because my instructor ADVISED ME to go 10km under the limit during my test!!!!!!!!!!!
Now thankfully everything else he said was spot on and I passed, but I will be having words with him if I ever run into him again!

Yeah I know the N2 is 60kph but I went out as far as the industrial estate the other day and drove around Finglas a bit before hand...without knowing the route, and I kept an eye out for speed limit signs and I didn't see any besides on the N2 so I was just wondering.

And thanks lightroom that's really helpful, I'll be sure to have a look on google maps!

And yes I'm getting two pre-tests this weekend, however I don't know if I'll actually be doing them in Finglas. I had two free lessons left (I had a voucher) and then guy said he'd give me pre-tests instead if I wanted since I don't really need any more lessons. So presumably they're an hour long....which wouldn't really give me enough time to get to Finglas, do a 40 minute test, and get back from where I live.

I'll just drive out sometime over this weekend if I get a chance (which might be difficult because I'll have to get ready for my Debs and first day of college which are both on Monday).

The grade 2 fault for lack of progress is the thing I was worried about, I dont want to go under the speed limit by 10kph.

Would I be safe enough to just presume that all the roads are 50kph besides the N2? After looking on google maps, I think the mellowes road is the one that I meant when I said the "main big-ish road" through Finglas that doesn't seem to have any speed limit signs.

And then of course residential estates would be slower

There is defo a 50kph sign on Mellowes Road, you will see it once you turn on to it from N2 for about 50 meters. There's no sign in the residential areas, keep at 30 up and down if the road is clear, you could do a bit faster than that if there were no stationary vehicles. Practice yourself before the test, apart from observation, reaction to hazards is a big failing point in Finglas too coz there will be kids playing around and stationed lorries(i had two).;)

There's an ex-tester instructing northside. Might be worth a call. Will PM his details. Good luck

i live in finglas, every road on the test route has a limit of 50kpm except for the n2 and the industrial estate in which the centre is and trust me, there are sign posts everywhere with the speed limit

I'm a driving instructor and know all the routes around SGS Finglas plus all speed limits. The speed limit is 50kph unless you see a sign that says otherwise. So a housing estate and the industrial estate is 50kph. The North Road is 60kph and that is the only road leading from the test centre and up to the "Lidl" Roundabout and back that is 60kph.

My company name is <SNIP>. You have to keep to the speed limit so all the other comments are correct. You'll get a grade 2 mark for progress if the traffic behind you wants to do 60kph in a 60kph zone when you are doing 50kph. Lots of ppl fail their driving test because they just drive slower than they normally would and end up holding everyone up.

Ok one last question....about the thread depth of tyres.. How are you supposed to check that?

Would I be asked to demonstrate how to check that during my test?

you wont be asked to demonstrate this but you might be asked the depth in the theory part of the exam

    1 question:

I saw RSA has a test center at Finglas. Is it same center as SGS?

    Thanks.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 651 ✭✭✭eire1

bahama they're completely different centres. You'll get a map on the back of your letter.

  • Hosted Moderators Posts: 10,661 ✭✭✭✭John Mason

SGS centre in an industrial Estate just off the N", where the Hurley Burley is.

RSA Centre is on Jamestown Road, just outside the village

as said previously check the map on the of the letter.

    Thanks for the information.

Does anyone know whether RSA Finglas is better than Raheny? I tried to change the center to SGS Finglas but RSA said no more new driving test will be accepted in SGS. I can only take the test under RSA. :(

I did the tests in all categories in Finglas (then Dept of Transport not RSA). I never had any problems with any of the examiners there.

(The RSA test centre is located in the old bakery on Jamestown Road).

i passed my test in RSA Finglas, done a terrible test

SGS Finglas told me i done a perfect driving test but they couldnt pass me because i was third gear instead of 2nd gear going over speed ramps .

    go figure.

at the end of the day, it is down to how you drive and your tester on the day. no one centre is better then another centre

FilipinosROCK - you've 2 posts to date and you've advertised in both of them. Banned for 7 days.

that's interesting to know because I've just double-checked the letter I got for my upcoming driving test in November & there's no map included in the envelope or on the reverse of the letter. Luckily the RSA website has a map so I've just located my test centre.

Bconneely, its not the best idea to revive old threads. You'll will be doing your test in RSA Finglas. Its just off the Jamestown road.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,674 ✭✭✭Faith+1

Agreed. Bconneely why have you only posted once since you registered a year ago?? We were soo worried about you....

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,727 ✭✭✭Midnight_EG

SGS have ceased to provide testing facilities also, so useless thread to revive!

This thread is two years old. As said, you'd be better off starting a new thread as information could be outdated.
