So, what do you think will happen to current schemes, pilots, policies etc in An Garda Siochana? How will the new budget effect the organisation? How will it effect recruitment?

    Please discuss:)

    What's in store for us?
I presume they'll cut back on gas guzzling ministerial mercs first as an example to the rest of us.
Then maybe management will cut back on the ecologically criminal amount of paper waste by using the "forward" facility on PULSE instead of printing a hard copy of everything?
There's a couple of hundred grand saved. I won't charge you a penny for that a thoisigh.

What would management do if they got rid of pulse printouts and requests for repetitive reports indicating what is already on the incident and narrative?

Members would see how empty the brasses desks are and realise that its pulse printouts that make their desks look busy. :D

Oh Christ thats sooooooooo true. Dont forget the 2nd and 3rd reminders that you havent sent the report that you did in fact send last week.

Get rid of the mercs, do away with reminders etc will save us money but that money will then be used on printing out the new custody records!!!!!!!! Have ye seen them?? Six pages long for one prisoner. I hate the day when a mule arrives at the station with 2 or 3 section 4 prisoners and i'm s.o.

overall they are a much better job though. dont do much po myself but definately if you follow the sections properly you can't be accused of leaving anything out. particularly the different sections for different detentions is excellent. twas a balls before just having the section 4

Yeah well you try doing it in Store Street, Pearce Street or the 2 Bridewells. As it is were upto a Gaoler and an assistant Gaoler but that wont last and who is left holding the can when prisoners havent been checked on time?

Tetra will still happen as the old system takes a lot of money to keep going as it is and the system is no longer actually supported by the manufacturer anyway.

Station works, upgrades, new stations will be hit huge. Anything not already budgeted for and / or started will be either cancelled or downgraded to patch jobs of the existing buildings.

Upgrading of systems still operating will be cancelled (CCTV, vehicles, etc) with only broken and unrepairable stuff still allowed for.

Recruitment will slow down but that wont be as bad as thought as the population will no longer grow as much and who knows, may even become a reduction.

Civilianisation will cease as the civil service is looking to reduce not increase.

Anvil and other OT based operations will be wound down.

when do you thibk the recruitment for AN GS will slow down. i reckon that there will be a full intake of 270 next month and then MAYBE slow down when the actual budget is announced. people reckon it will be cut short this time but there has been no official release of this..

I reckon(and hope) there is at least another recruitment campaign early 2009 as there is an Open Day at the Garda College in October. Colleges don't have open days unless they wish to attract new students.

Remember that the civil service can and has simple ceased recuitment mid operation. Im not suggesting complete stops but I would imagine after the current crop we will see a delay in the next recruitment drive. Until the Government can review the situation, thats the basis behind 11 month pay freezes. To see if we can pull it back together, if the global situation will improve or if we will need to start thinking long term.

I hope that there is a full recruitment in november, i have only seen one person on boards announce that they have their acceptance letter for AGS for the November 3rd. I have my medical on 8th October and having waiting since January for this I have been on boards alot and am hopful that the PCT dates are not full (if i pass) as my previous exoerience on boards lets me know.

As for all this rumour I do not feel that recruitment can be frozen. AGS need to recruit a certain amount of people each year to replace the people that have given their service to the force to maybe the recruitment will just be slowed down.

I really wish that a press statement would be released to put all of our minds at ease.

the unfortunate thing is in the past few years lads with the 30 done walked and went onto find employment easily. this wont happen in the current economic climate.
lads will stay as long as they can so the numbers of recruits will be cut .

i heard that there will be an intake of 60 at the start of next year.. but the days of 300 in an intake are over.. sure there cutting phase 5 to 1 week to save on paying sub allowance.

It'll be like Ryanair. You'll have to buy your own uniform, but if you get it in the same sweatshop they currently use, it'll only cost you about €50!:D

    A 100ish intake; The 270ish intakes are gone I'd say;

I would imagine your safe enough being so far along the process, Im just reminded of the last time a freeze was introduced.

I want to see a massive intake in november as much as anyone (as im one of the unfortunate fellas currently on the waiting list to get in)

In all honesty it doesnt look good for anyone looking to get recruited in the coming months/years. There is no denying the fact that things are not looking good no matter what side of training you are on. Last night while bored i googled around a bit on garda numbers and recruitment figures, etc... Found a lot of stuff from the last couple of years about transcripts from the Dail and statements from ministers. Fianna Fail had made one of their election promises (remember this is when ireland's economy was good and there wasnt too many cutbacks) Basically they were looking for around 14,000-15,000 gardai in service around 2008-2010. Its been said in various sources that on january 2009 there will be just over 15,000 gardai in full operational duty (i.e not including trainees) So looks like they have reached their desired levels. So now the only recruits will probably be taken in to replace those few retiring.

On the flip side of the coin, im echoing the thoughts of a few others ive been speaking to. If this recession thing is getting worse and so many more people are becoming unemployed then crime will rise, so why cut the numbers of officers on the streets? Its all well and good for the budget cutting new squad cars and station upgrades but if a town is overrun with crime there should be the personnel there to deal with it.

They have to be paid, clothed, equiped, trained, etc. Money has to come from somewhere and crime is probable worse now than 30 years ago when there was only 6000 Gardai

agreed sure i ws told that 5 years ago

    but its been cemented..

270 recruits 5 weeks over night sub ...

that gravy train is over ...

Has anyone seen ON PAPER that phase 5 has been cut down? If so, from when?

Also, speaking of budget problems, ive heard of a lovely new 3Litre mondeo in a station in the west which is not allowed out on patrol as it uses to much petrol!

very much doubt that TBH. it would show up on returns and would prob end up getting put somewhere else

    Wouldnt surprise me anywy!

"...and the guards used to have cosworths but gave them back because the couldn't handle the power...."
It's bad when we rehash this stuff ourselves.

I mean, for gawds sake scubadave. You're implying that waste could be an issue in An Garda Síochána? :D

There are plenty of 3.0L mondeos in use assigned to traffic and also 3.0L jeeps assigned to both traffic and SDU/ERU.

Take a trip into the Garage in HQ and you will see for yourself.

The other half is down the college on phase one in a phase of 375 at the minute and the new phase going in after them in november only has 80!!!!! That's what heppens when the govt reaches the magic number of 14,000. Now they are recruiting just enough to cover retirements...JUST!!!!!

According to Dept of Justice, 400 new recruits will be recruited in 2009. That's better than I thought it would be.

    • Budgetary constraints mean that there will need to be a reduction in Garda overtime next year.

    Ergh . . . not unexpected though.

    JUSTICE GROUP

Gross Expenditure for this Group of Votes, which includes the Department of Justice, Equality & Law Reform, An Garda Síochána and the Prisons and Courts Services, is €2,629.7 million in 2009, a decrease of €75.8 million (€76.3 million Current and an extra €0.5 million in capital) relative to the 2008 forecast outturn.

While the overall level of funding has been reduced, the Group of Votes will still be delivering on its key services:-

    *

    capital expenditure of €156 million is being made available to fund the ongoing Courts and Prisons building programmes, a new State Pathology laboratory and the Garda National Digital Radio project;
    *

on the current side, funding is continuing to be provided for all existing programmes including services relating to equality, disability, asylum, probation, legal aid and an additional €10 million for the provision of speed cameras.

The detailed 2009 Estimates for these bodies are set out at pages G.45 to G.51.

    from : http://www.budget.gov.ie/2009/budgetsummary09.html

so our new radios look safe but still €76.3 million is a lot to lose

has anyone noticed that there is ongoing recruitment for Garda Reserve?
Does this mean that it will work out more economically to have more reserve gardai out on the streets rather than giving full time members overtime?? Even though they reached less than 20 per cent of their target for numbers in reserve?
Anyone hear anthing about a recruitment in november for Gardai??

Word is that intake in november is only going to be around 100 - 120. The last intake was the last big one with over 300 students.

i was in the college when the last intake came in, and there's about 270 in the phase (majority were female which is a change from the norm) and next year they're planning on recruiting 400 in total, so the nov intake could be down around 80 to 100
