    Hello to all
i am a newbie to this forum as i have just found it
I was wondering if anyone has any knowledge about Nikon lenses going wrong
i purchased a new nikon D 80 with a nikon 28-80 lens on ebay from a Usa based store about 12 months ago The lens was ok for about 9 months but has now stopped working .All I get when i fit this lens is a flashing F in the viewfinder?
its not the camera as i also have a 80-200 and that works fine
Is it a small fault or perhaps a more serious one
The problem I have is that the store appears to have vanished from ebay and i would have a problem getting it repaired under guarantee?
    Any info would be appreciated
    many Thanks
    Rusty

Has the lens an aperture ring? Don't know nikon but i've seen on other brands something similar which turned out to be an inconsistency between the custom camera setting and the lens aperture ring. i.e. the custom setting said don't allow aperture ring while the lens when fitted was trying to use the aperture ring setting rather than the 'A' setting. The end result was a 'F--' blinking in the lcd and camera refusing to take a picture. i.e. that the camera couldn't tell what aperture f-stop was intended by the photographer.

I hope its as easy as that for you. Again, apologies if irrelevant as I don't know the nikon gear.

See page 132 of D80 manual
    http://www.nikonusa.com/pdf/manuals/noprint/D80_noprint.pdf

Whenever I got this before I took the lens off and attached it again and all was fine

Try setting the lens to F/22, or whatever its smallest (i.e. biggest number) aperture is.

yeah there should be a lock button at the end of the aperture ring if you slide that down it should be ok, needs to be at the smallest aperture thought to do it.

Thanks to all for taking the time to reply
Just to say I know very little about this camera and i really should take the time to read the manual
However, i took the advice here and found that when i set the camera on M-manual- it will fire away with this lens. but not on Auto which is where I had it set--complete novice here by the way.
I have not managed to get it to fire on any other setting
Why will it not take pics as before-on auto-and what would have made it suddenly react in this way
    Thanks again

The camera will fire on manual no matter what.

Did you try what the others have mentioned about the apeture ring?

    This is an aperture ring

You could check to see if the metal connectors on both the lense and camera are clean because that could cause problems too.
