I have a Belkin N1 vision which I did use as Wifi,Router,ADSL connection.

I now have a VPN router which is behind a modem and would like to use the N1 as purely an access point downstairs behind the router so its only connection to the network is phsyical ethernet.

Can I turn the N1 into purely an access point? the majority of house is wired with CAT5 except garage(new office) and wireless is a bit hit and miss in garage

if it is possible what do i need to do

Yes you can indeed put the N1 in to AP mode and will extend your network - Just ensure it gets an IP address from something on your network, DHCP or set it static

    Best of luck
