No menus appear.

There is no start menu or bottom menu on my ubuntu desktop. I tried pressing alt+f2 but it won't bring up a terminal neither will it allow me to create a launcher. Any ideas?

Are the panels there?

If not, and if you can get to a terminal
sudo apt-get install gnome-panel

Then you can right-click on the panel and add the menus from there.
