I'm thinking of getting this from www.hardwareversand.de, cost is €173.

Just wondering what people think of this as a buy.
It got a good enough review here http://www.trustedreviews.com/mp3/review/2007/09/12/Cowon-D2-DMB-4GB-MP3-Media-Player/p1.
The main criticism it got was that it was overpriced but it's a bit cheaper than the listed price with www.hardwareversand.de.

My criteria are a. portability (carrying in my pocket or on top of poker table). b.sound, c.versatility of music formats. so it seems to fit the bill.

The video element would be something new for me - I honestly don't know how much I will use it, but no harm in having it either as an extra toy.

Also one of the main reasons I'm thinking of buying this is that it's simply the closest match to what I'm looking for on hardwareversand.de - as I'm buying several other items from them at the same time I wanted to get my pmp from them as well and the price on it seems competitive enough - unlike their prices with ipods - for some reason they seem expensive with them.

Anyway this good enough to go with or is there something glaringly better in the same field?

edited title - DMB to DAB

DMB won't work over here (europe), but there's also the regular D2 which is cheaper than the DMB model.

When I say DMB won't work here I mean the DMB feature won't work, the rest of the D2 will, but you'll be paying extra for something you can't use...

Anyhoo, the D2 is an excellent player, one of the best on the market and I highly recommend it.

Cheers. Soz that should have said DAB not DMB. Not sure if I'll get the use out of DAB to make it worthwhile. I'm guessing probably not but hwv are out of stock on the black d2 model(I don't really like the white one), I'll probably just bite the bullet and buy the one with DAB.

    Hi there,

Have had the D2 for a few months now and have nothing but good things to say about it. I got the 4 gig non DAB version and an 8 gig SDHC card and havent looked back (initially I thought that wouldnt be enough storage but even filling 12 gigs is hard).

Video playback is more than adequate and the supplied software has converted every video I've thrown at it - including Quicktime trailers. The battery life is the real star here, I've gone a week without charging it while watching videos and listening to audio books for a couple of hours a day on the train. As for your criteria - it is smaller than a pack of playing cards and very light, but feels quite solid. In terms of sound, I'm not an audiophile but it certainly beats my old sony player, and as for video its played every format I've thrown its way.

Other extras include being able to play flash games, some of which are really good fun (although it eats battery life) and the ability to personalise the interface with skins.

As for downsides... I find the dynamic playlists a little finnicky and, although I understand there is a way to copy your own playlists onto the D2, it is quite complicated. Some people complain of audio being out of sync in videos but it hasnt bothered me and you mention that video is more of a novelty than a deal breaker for you. One other point is that the screen is relatively small and, because of its dimensions, widescreen movies will play in an even smaller letterbox within it. On the other hand, as most controls are accessed through the (rather fun) touch screen they really do get to use every inch of the players surface as a screen.

Ok, this reply was longer than I intended but I suppose thats an indication that I like the player. The Cowon D2 has been a great introduction into the PMP world for me. It may not be as pretty as the Apple offerings but it is functionality and sound/video quality that matters and the D2 easily competes with the best.

    Highly Recommended.

    :)
