Has anyone seen the article in today's Irish Field? For those of you who haven't, Punchestown and the RDS have both been suggested as possible venues in a bid for Ireland to stage the 2014 World Equestrian Games. There will be a meeting next Tuesday to discuss a draft feasibility report. Wouldn't it be absolutely fantastic if Ireland hosted it?

Yes it would be fantastic Alibear to host the WEG. But lets not forget our attempted orgainising of the 1998 games which we had got, only to see a f*** up made regarding sponsorship which led us to a situation where we had to get Rome to dig us out of a hole and take over the event.
I actually thought then that we would never be in the running again for it, but I suppose it's 16 years later so maybe we are up for it this time.
Of course the reason for this proposed bid is because the promise of money is there from Alltech who have offered €10 million. Their main man is Irish and they are the main sponsors of WEG 2010 in Kentucky.

While hosting the WEG would be a fantastic opportunity for Ireland in many respects, it has to be remembered that hosting such an event is going to operate at a loss and huge sponsorship would be required in order for such an event to be run here. As Finbarrk said, that was one of the main reasons for its failure in 1998. If the sponsorship could be found to cover all costs, then maybe it could be feasible.
