I've just moved into the West Limerick/Abbeyfeale area from the UK. I'm struggling with TV reception. I can get a watchable signal for TV3 & TG4 through a normal type TV aerial (about a 1.5ft long) but i get no RTE. Do I need one of those square mesh type aerials I see on houses for the RTE Channels:confused:??

This website may help you, There is a relay serving Abbeyfeale.

A UHF Group B horizontally polarized antenna maybe all you require. Where you are in relation to the relay may change matters.

If you can only pick up TV3 and TG4 then it sounds like you're using a UHF aerial and you're picking up the signal from either Maghera or Mullaganish, both of which broadcast RTE1 & 2 on VHF. The relay in Abbeyfeale transmits RTE1 and RTE2 on UHF, also with horizontal polarity so it looks like you're not getting this signal.

Even if you could pick up the Abbeyfeale signal, they don't appear to transmit TV3 so your only option I think is to add a VHF aerial. Are you able to see which UHF channels your TV is using for TV3 and TG4?

The TV might be UHF only if it was bought in the UK.
If its modern there may be a country menu to enable Irish reception bands however.
Even when connected to an outdoor UHF aerial only, some sort of reception of VHF may be received in good areas, but the above has nothing
Its probably a rural area not covered by the UHF relay mentioned
