acer 80GB HDD only 74GB?

just bought myself the acer aspire 5315 laptop in a local electrical store and everything was going well with downloading vista sp1 and all the other updates required before sp1 can be installed. then i noticed something odd as the HDD is supposed to be 80GB but appears to be only 74.5GB.

i could well have missed something so all suggestions will be taken on board. i am taking into account the hidden recovery partition which acer states at being approx 9GB

    hidden recovery partition = 9.76GB
    drive C: = 32.51GB total size
    drive D: 32.26GB total size

this seems to add up to a total size of 74.53GB
would the other 5.47GB be hidden or allocated somewhere else?

Short Answer: It is due to the gigabyte being represented by both 1000MB and 1024MB

    Long Answer: Link

I would agree with the OP, we are all ripped off on this one just like the Airline charges. Im surprised EU regulation hasn't come into effect that all computer manufacturers and hdd suppliers must state the exact space that is allocated on the hdd. :D

You could have included the link to Yahoo Answers at the least.

You know, I've noticed the same thing. For example, I was in PC World the other day and saw a computer advertised as having a 1TB HDD. Upon closer inspection of the display model, you can only imagine my outrage when I discovered that, in fact, it only had a 913GB HDD! In a blind fit of rage I murdered the nearest sales assistant and only sent 91.3% of his corpse to his boss. Then he called the police! Hypocrites the lot of them.

Yeah it's a pain in the ass. Hard drive manufacturers should be shot for doing it.

Feckin' 3 are probably involved in this conspiracy - ask them for the unlocking code for the missing 6gig.

where in this thread have i mentioned any conspiracy or any mobile phone operator? if you dont have anything relavant to add dont post at all as these type of nasty posts only leave people thinking Boards.ie is not somewhere they will be welcomed unless they meet your exacting(unpublished) standards

This thread is nearly two years old! If you only have that much memory then i would think there is something wrong. Unless of course the remaining memory is taken up by music/videos etc!

Anyway, please start a new thread rather than bumping an old one:)
