Sound issues with Ubuntu 8.04

I'm totally new to Linux so please excuse my lack of knowledge and/or stupidity. I have my pc dual booting Ubuntu/Vista and everything went fine with the exception of the sound. My pc (sigmatel sound card) is connected to my Creative speakers via S/PDIF and I can't get a whisper from it. Connecting a set of headphones to the pc works though. I've googled it and it seems to be an issue but I couldn't locate a solution.
I hate to be turned off trying it more over a silly thing like this. Any ideas folks? Cheers.

I assume it's only in Ubuntu you have sound problems?

There's a step by step guide in the Ubuntu forums - looks a bit complex but fairly easy to follow and just copy and paste the commands.

Sound problems are common but that guide sorted mine out.
