MacBook Pro Display issue - partially resolved!

Hi all, I had a discussion here with a few of you some months back (here) about display issues on my MacBook Pro. I won't reiterate it all here (if you're interested in any way, follow the link and have a look) but I thought I'd post a quick follow up.

Since then, I've been running the notebook generally with one of the video driver extensions (a 'bundle', actually) disabled, which gives me almost everything bar Quartz Extreme, which I do need for, say, fancy screen effects or watching movies with VLC. Other than that, the core temperature runs a little higher, probably from the non-video hardware having to do a lot more work.

However, since the 10.5.5 update, the graphics display is stable enough that if I don't push it too hard and keep the fans running hard, I have a fraction of the trouble I was having before! It's definitely a lot more stable, has a lot less trouble with screen artefacts, and only one display lock-up from many hours of the system being in use (which is generally not acceptable, but by my recent experience, I can live with it).

So, I don't know what they changed (Apple tend to be cryptic in their update notes), but it is definitely a big improvement, and if you are having any MacBook Pro display trouble then running the 10.5.5 Combo Update is very worthwhile and might just resolve the issues you are seeing.
