Well, imdb.com lists director Walter Hill as the only writer, so your relation could be mistaken.

Swears was driver or the driver. it was a black covered paperback and was about the same plot as the driver movie and in 70's. Knew about walter hill but thanks anyway;) I cannot find any ref online to such a book

I'm pretty sure it was an original screenplay. However, its possible that it could have been one of those cash-in film novelisations that happen after a film is released.

Anyway, anyone who has also seen 'Le Samourai' knows that Hill's screenplay is HEAVILY influenced by it both in terms of plot and tone (even though he claims never to have seen the film before making The Driver)

Damn cool movie (wierd how Hills career crumbled to mediocrity after the success of 48 Hrs)

Further to my last message I did a bit of scouting around and i was right - it was a film novelisation by one Clyde B. Philips. And the good news is there's a copy available here!:

There's also a copy in TCD library if you have access to that. Hope it helps!
