think its towards kinnity in offaly. there is also a mast near castlerea in roscommon. so basically north and south of athlone, not sure which one is nearer though.

There's a massive Eircom mast beside the Roslevin telephone exchange in Athlone, you can see it from almost anywhere in the town, could Chorus have a few aerials up there? Otherwise the highest spot in the Athlone area is the clump of trees out the Roscommon road known as the Hill O'Berries but last time I looked there was no mast there though I pulled over there one day in the car to do a scan and found RTE Radio1 on seven different frequencies!

My Athlone correspondent (the brother) says the Chorus aerial is on the water tower on the Leinster side of the town in the Retreat area.

    Coylemj,

Bingo! That's the one alright. Many thanks to you and all others who offered suggestions.

Incidentally the water tower on the Connaught side has a ring of mobile phone antenna all around it, it's in a higher position than the water tower on the Leinster side but I guess a TV aerial and mobile phone transmission equipment don't make for good neighbours, not for TV reception anyway.
