problem with wii and controller

just bought a wii recently, and worked fine at the start but now every time i turn it on, it's really hard to find the pointy hand on the screen, and usually have to point the controller over 90 degrees to the left before the hand appears on the screen. I've tried resynching the controller but no luck.

Anyone know how to fix this?

    thanks

Are there any other sources of infra-red nearby? Little lights or candles or anything? If so, switch them off. Make sure the sensor bar is connected well.
