Decent wideband aerial for Kippure reception in Newbridge

    Hey lads,

Anyone got some advice re: a suitable single aerial I can use in Newbridge to pick up from Kippure. We currently have a 7 (I think) pole yagi with a slx 2-way amplifier in the attic which is OK, but there's some bleed of channels (can occasionally see RTE2 behind RTE1). TV3 picture is decidedly 'soft' and TG4 has some harmonic lines running across it. Would a wideband grid aerial be better, or should I think about getting a better amplifier?

    Thanks in advance.

Kippure broadcasts TV3 on 62 and TG4 on 59, the DTT MUXs will be on 54,58, 61 and 64 so your ideal UHF aerial would be a C/D group, not a wideband.

Ta for that. Any tips in the interim for improving the aul analog reception - Is two aerials a better idea or would the aforementioned wideband grid work a bit better than the current yagi?

    Cheers!

I assume you already have two aerials since RTE 1 & 2 are VHF on Kippure and TV3 & TG4 are UHF - same as most of the older transmitters. Your best bet for UHF is a C/D group though a wideband should also be and as I said in my earlier post you only need C/D even when DTT comes around.

For the moment you also will need a VHF aerial for decent RTE1/2 reception.

If your house is in an elevated location you could try to see if there's a signal from Clermont Carn in Co. Louth, they broadcast all stations on UHF and as a bonus in the same direction you'd also be able to pick up Camlough near Newry who broadcast all the UK channels, also on UHF, also on vertical polarity and also in the C/D group.

The 7 element yagi is for the VHF Kippure RTE1 & 2. You should have a 2nd UHF aerial eithe a group or wideband as said in posts above. you can join the 2 signals using a diplexer and onmly amplify the services you need to. Diplexer about €15 euro.

For Kippure, a wideband grid aerial works slightly better than a c/d contract when I tried with both aerials. A grid aerial peaks at around Ch. 59 according to the triax website.

Camlough will be night impossible to receive, as after readjustments of our aerial, we get perfect Irish tv but Camlough is still a bit poor and snowy, with teletext not receivable.

On a more important note, Camlough reception will be entirely wiped out by Three Rock DTT, and Kippure DTT too when it starts. I'm only able to see what camlough reception is like now the trial has ended.
