    Hi,
Noobie here so forgive the complete lack of background knowledge....like many others I'll happily spend an hour on the odd Sunday evening watching Dublin Airport (usually munching on an Eddie Rockets) and have noticed a few around me with air traffic radio scanners.....I'd like to get one, are there any recommended makes/models and where would I go about sourcing one from? I'm assuming its a bit more complicated than a SW radio?
    Thanks
    Kyle

    Bearcat/Uniden are very popular

Make sure it is digital whatever it is anyway

they are generalyl easy to operate- you can select to scan a range of frequencies at once and the like

They are above board so you should not have a problem getting one

Are these scanners still illegal in Ireland?

I agree with Steyr, the Yupiteru MVT7100 is one of if not the best you can get. Maplins in the UK stock it. Not sure about the Irish branches.

I also have the AOR AR8200 Mk3 which is also very good. I was able to receive Shanwick HF while in Ireland during August.

I'm using a Uniden Bearcat BC72XLT, cheap and cheerful. I got it off ebay fr next to nothing about a year ago for next to nothing, delivered.

www.liveatc.net is also very good if you're bored at home.

I would also second bearcat scanners...simple and easy to use and mine had great reception of dublin airport from when i lived in maynooth and coolmine.

As regards legality just dont go walking around waving it in front of cops or in the airport and you'll be fine :)

If you want something cheap and cheerful, as scanners can be very expensive, try Maplins.

I got a Maycom AR-108. Works a treat. Its digital, has 99 memory channels, and is nice and small. About 30-40 yo-yo's!

    Also available at: http://www.longcom.ie/scanners/ar108.asp
    ;)

Ha ha, that brings to mind one particular incident I had.....I flattered them with my apparent knowledge of the law on scanners and they went off scratching their heads!

I would have thought this kind of thing would be inherently aviation-related as we're talking about air band scanners. It's in the right place ;)

As regards legality - it's perfectly legal iirc to listen to aircraft in this country. Listening to the Gardaí etc is illegal.

    Just noticed - 1000th post! :P
